There is a generation of children who learn to write code before they can talk to people in India
In India, children only 3 and 4 years old have been taken by their parents to centers to learn code.
When Rishi Shiv P wrote the code, a boy just 5 years old in Bengaluru, India, he was not distracted by anything. His eyes stared intently at the screen and the small fingers typed on the keyboard proficiently to open menus and build nested loops.
His favorite corner of a house in Bengaluru, India is his mother's desk. When the Quartz page reporter came to the interview, Rishi was completing his Flappy Bird game. Recheschwari Shiv, Rishi's mother, told reporters the games and graphics he created in the past four months. What Mrs. Shiv said shows that Rishi is very talented in programming.
Rishi excitedly said, he created a handball game on the computer because he loves the sport very much. Rishi's parents signed up for him to attend a center specializing in providing programming courses for children called Whitehat Jr because they found that their children were very interested in computers and technology. Currently, Rishi spends about 3 hours a week learning code.
Anchal Rekhi, Rishi's code teacher in Whitehat Jr., is very proud of the progress he has made. Rekhi said, the way Rishi used logic to adjust the ball speed helped it hit the goal in the boy's pitching game that surprised him.
When sharing more, children point code by dragging and dropping objects and code but sometimes they are extremely creative.
Click and swipe
In today's digital age, smartphones and tablets always go hand in hand and help children entertain. Even many children know how to swipe and click before they know or talk well. Therefore, many parents have given their children to learn how to create technologies that are still in use from a very young age.
In major cities in India such as Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, Gurugram and Chandigarh, code teaching and programming centers are open a lot. These centers use popular Western tools and platforms, including MIT's Studio Studio, LightBot, Botley or Scratch. Here, children will learn how to create software, code structures, languages that computers can understand.
In Whitehat Jr, a center in Mumbai, children will first be taught terms like code, statements and algorithms. After that, they will learn a basic but extremely important task of code and programming, how to break a task into many code that computers can understand. Children are explained concepts through stories and images, so even if they cannot read and write fluently, they can still understand.
Karan Bajaj, the Whitehat Jr founder, added that at his center, 7 or 8-year-olds have created a flying UFO and a 6-year-old has created a spelling bee through pull commands drop.
Delete digital blindness
One more important reason to push Indian parents to their children to learn code early is "digital blindness" and improve cognitive skills, develop computational thinking.
Bharat Divyang, a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology, the father of a 5-year-old boy, currently running the ZugZwang Academy in Bengaluru, opened interdisciplinary courses on chess, code and programming for children from 7 to 14 years old.
One day of the week, Rohit, a 10-year-old boy, the youngest member of a group of 7 students, is busy addressing the challenge in the Python programming language. Rohit said he likes to solve the challenges in Python, his dream is to become a software engineer and be able to work abroad as an adult. Rohit can solve 7 to 8 challenges in a day if it is easy but sometimes with difficult challenges he gets stuck and only has 1 completed.
An hour later, it was the other students' turn to attend the class. Ananya's 8-year-old mission is to solve Lightbot, a puzzle game by code.
The center of Divyang recently opened a class about coding to teach pre-coding 8, 9-year-old kids with puzzles and platforms like Crytogram.
Divyang said that not every child participating in these classes becomes future software engineers. But in this world of digital connectivity, code and computing power will help them to excel in any career they choose in the future.
In 2017, Eupheus Learning, an educational technology startup from Delhi, launched Cubetto, a block programming language for children who are illiterate. Cubetto is a wooden toy robot for 3-year-old kids, helping children understand basic programming knowledge without a screen.
Both parents and educators believe that code is an effective way to help children think logically and know how to solve problems, helping them be ready for the job market dominated by science. Data and computer science in the future.
