Scientists from the Wildlife Conservation Society have compiled a map in the hope that they can support wildlife managers and conservation workers around the world. The researchers posted this map in Nature.

"This map is very important, it shows that the wilderness is being destroyed at an alarming level and needs urgent protection with a drop of nearly 10% since the early 1990s , " James Allan, a doctoral student at the University of Queensland, Australia, said in a press release.

The largest remaining wild areas are found in South America, Africa, Australia and the Arctic regions of North America and Eurasia. A remarkable wilderness is also spread throughout the Tibetan Plateau.

On the map, green marks the remaining wilderness, while pink shows the wilderness has been lost since 1993.

Researchers say governments must work harder to ensure that the wilderness does not continue to shrink.
