Sony is developing a PS5 Pro version, expected to be released at the end of 2024
A new report from Insider Gaming, citing unnamed sources, claims Sony is working on a new version of the PlayStation 5, called the PS5 Pro, and is expected to launch sometime in late 2024.
Just like PS4 with PS4 Pro, PS5 Pro is sure to have higher visuals, performance and speed. In addition, the Next Generation of PlayStation - PS6 is unlikely to launch until at least 2028. So a PS5 Pro launch late next year would make sense, similar to what Sony did for predecessor product lines. Following the release of the PS4 in 2013, Sony released an upgraded PS4 Pro in 2016. The new console model includes a more powerful processor and GPU that increases the ability to support game resolutions from 1080p to 4K with HDR, and comes with a larger capacity hard drive.
Currently, details about the design and hardware configuration of the PS5 Pro are still very limited. A recently published patent by PlayStation architect Mark Cerny suggests that Sony is looking to 'accelerate' the PS5 Pro's in-game Ray Tracing performance. In addition, another major improvement of the Pro version will likely lie in better heat dissipation. PS5 currently uses a fan cooling system and liquid metal compound. But the Pro version will switch to liquid cooling or 'water cooling' commonly used in gaming PC models. This upgrade provides cooler temperatures, maintaining performance when equipped with a more powerful chip.
All of these are currently just rumors, although they come from many reputable sources, they are still for reference only. We will need to wait for official statements from Sony before making more in-depth comments about the product. Sony's latest hardware product at the moment is the PS VR2 virtual reality headset for PS5 that supports more than 30 games.
