According to Satoshi Yoshihara, head of Sony's sensor division, to meet the needs of some smartphone manufacturers, Sony is planning to increase production of 3D sensors for both front and rear cameras.

3D sensors on smartphones can be used for many different purposes and will become popular next year. However, the current main purpose of carriers is to promote 3D face recognition to compete with Face ID from Apple.

Sony's new 3D sensor will use laser signals, measuring the time it takes for a pulse to bounce back to create a map of the depth of the surroundings, which can operate within a distance of 5 meters. It works similar to the way bats identify the environment, make sounds and hear echoes. In this way, 3D sensors can create a more detailed model of the user's face, helping to improve the security of the device.
