Smartphone will replace the car keys in the future
Use a smartphone to unlock devices or vehicles that are going to be popular in the near future thanks to a digital key called Digital Key. This technology was developed by a partnership between a number of phone manufacturers such as Apple, LG, Samsung and major auto manufacturers.
Now, with some special vehicles like the Tesla Model 3, owners can use their smartphones to make keys if they want. But that is not a common standard for the whole industry, so it is difficult to be popular.
However, according to Engadget, a company called Car Connectivity Consortium developed a solution called Digital Key 1.0, which could solve this problem.
Digital Key 1.0 is considered a virtual key that can unlock the car, start the engine, share access with different operators. This is the result of cooperation between smart phone manufacturers and major auto brands.
The digital lock will be sent to the user's smartphone by a car manufacturer via a reliable system. Subsequently, near-range NFC technology is used to grant access to each trip. With this new technology, when you want to steal a car the bad guys will have to try to steal more smartphones.
However, this technology is still limited when car owners will not be able to do some manipulation, such as sitting in the house and unlocking the car.

Major phone brands such as Apple, LG and Samsung have contacted and started working with major car manufacturers such as BMW, Hyundai and Volkswagen to apply this digital key into practice in the future. The Digital Key 2.0 version promises to provide more interoperability between cars and mobile devices. It is expected that it will be released in the first quarter of 2019.
