Salespeople use superhuman memory to 'store' information on more than 1,300 credit card guests and use it to shop online
Yusuke Taniguchi, 34, a part-time employee at a shopping center in Koto City, Tokyo, was recently arrested for stealing credit card information of more than 1,300 customers and using it to buy online.
Specifically, Taniguchi used his sublime memory (image memory, also known as "eidetic memory") to 'store' personal information of customers whenever they used credit cards to buy things. Although the payment processing process only takes a few seconds, this guy has already memorized all the necessary factors to use the card later to shop online including the owner name, number 16 digits of card, expiration date and security code.
While searching Taniguchi's home, police found a notebook that recorded hundreds of names and credit card numbers he had stolen in the past.
Taniguchi told police that he used credit card information to order various types of products and then sold them to pawn shops for money. The money he earns goes on things like rent and food.
In March this year, Taniguchi ordered two expensive shoulder bags worth about 270,000 yen (US $ 2,500) using the stolen credit card data. The goods were delivered at Taniguchi's apartment, which is how investigators tracked him down.
Through the notebook of Yusuke Taniguchi, the police estimated the number of credit cardholders with stolen information was more than 1,300. They are now determining Taniguchi's crime range.
