OpenAI launches Prism: A dedicated workspace for scientific researchers.
OpenAI introduces Prism, a workspace for scientists that integrates GPT-5.2, LaTeX, and real-time collaboration on a cloud platform.
OpenAI recently announced that researchers worldwide are using AI as a true collaborator in their daily scientific work. According to the company, approximately 1.3 million users globally discuss advanced science and engineering topics on ChatGPT each week . Notably, users specializing in science and mathematics send about 3.5 times more messages than average ChatGPT users.
To better serve the research community, OpenAI officially introduces Prism – an AI-native workspace designed specifically for scientific writing and collaboration. Prism is built on Crixet, the cloud-based LaTeX platform that OpenAI previously acquired. This tool runs on the latest GPT-5.2 model and is now available to all users with a free ChatGPT personal account. OpenAI also announced that Prism will soon be available on ChatGPT Business, Team, Enterprise, and Education packages in the coming weeks.
Writing a scientific paper has traditionally involved constantly switching between various tools such as word processors, PDF files, LaTeX compilers, reference management software, and chat interfaces. Prism aims to consolidate all of these processes into a single cloud-based workspace, where researchers can edit LaTeX, manage citations, work with images, and collaborate in real time without leaving the system.
With Prism, users can leverage GPT-5.2 in Thinking mode to develop ideas, test hypotheses, and reason about complex scientific problems. The tool supports creating and editing equations, managing references, and working with illustrations. Prism even has the ability to convert hand-drawn diagrams on a whiteboard into LaTeX code, and supports voice editing for simple changes.
Collaboration capabilities are also a major highlight of Prism. The platform allows for an unlimited number of collaborators, and thanks to its entirely cloud-based operation, sharing workspaces and co-editing documents with others takes only a few clicks.
OpenAI predicts that AI will profoundly change the way software is developed in 2025, and science is likely to undergo a similar transformation in 2026. As AI begins to remove barriers to everyday research, the pace of scientific discovery will accelerate significantly. Prism is seen as one of OpenAI's first steps toward that future.
