OpenAI is set to launch a Chromium-based AI browser, taking on Google head-on

OpenAI is testing a new web browser with built-in artificial intelligence, built on the Chromium platform . According to leaked sources, this product may be released first on macOS.

AI browser with lots of 'automation' features

OpenAI has reportedly begun upgrading ChatGPT to become the foundation for a new browser that could compete with Chrome's current dominance. The new browser will feature the following highlights:

  1. AI-powered tab selection : intelligent tab management and suggestion.
  2. New tab page : personalized new tab page.
  3. AI browsing : allows the browser to automatically surf the web and search for information on behalf of the user, similar to the Copilot mode feature on Microsoft Edge.

Previously, ChatGPT had Agent mode – a mode that uses Linux terminal and Chromium browser on cloud platform to handle complex tasks, such as: 'create PowerPoint presentations from personal documents and internet sources'. Test users said that Agent mode worked quite stably and solved many needs well.

Keep users in the ChatGPT experience

According to the disclosure, the new browser is built on a unified agentic system. In terms of interface, the product may look similar to Chrome, but the difference is that it will keep users in the ChatGPT chat frame more, instead of having to constantly access external websites.

According to experts, a ChatGPT-based browser could become the new 'stop' on the internet, when everything revolves around AI instead of traditional web browsing.
