New charging technology allows electric cars to charge for 3 minutes to travel 100km, as fast as filling gasoline
Recently, a group of the world's leading car manufacturers including BMW, Porsche and Siemens have announced the creation of a new charging technology that allows cars to charge as fast as gasoline. 450kW charging station allows electric cars to charge 3 minutes to reach 100km, only takes 15 minutes to fully charge the battery.
Chairman of the technology transfer board at the Faraday Institute, Ian Ellerington, said that the new technology is better than all existing similar technologies. Specifically, 450 kW charging station is nearly 4 times more expensive than Tesla's supercharger (only 120kW). But there are still issues to be solved before this technology appears on all roads.
President Ellerington added that the new generation of charging devices will solve the problem of full charge for too long, an important issue to pull the current electric car industry back. This helps electric cars in the future can run long distance like normal fuel-burning cars.
However, whether this newly developed fast charging technology can be widely applied depends on many problems. One of the key factors is the creation of a car with a battery that can withstand a huge amount of energy transmitted to it. Currently on the market, no electric car can meet the new charging technology.
According to Keith Pullen, professor of energy systems at the University of London, fast charging technology is only suitable for emergency situations. Because if the battery is charged too quickly, it will cause battery performance to drop and in the long run will make the battery bottle fast.
In addition, this super fast technology requires a huge amount of energy. Professor Pullen said it would take 6 megawatts of energy, enough electricity to sustain the operation of a small town for charging stations with 20 super-fast charging systems operating. It is necessary to add more revolutionary changes, not just install charging station.
