Microsoft officially closes online movie and TV store

Microsoft has officially stopped selling movies and TV shows online. In a new support document, the company announced that users will no longer be able to purchase digital content through the Microsoft Store on its website, Windows apps, or Xbox.

The notice stated:

Microsoft is no longer offering new entertainment content for purchase, including movies and TV shows, on Microsoft.com, Microsoft Store (Windows), and Microsoft Store (Xbox). However, you can continue to access content you've purchased on the Movies & TV app on your Xbox or Windows device.

The good news is that your previous purchases will be preserved. In an FAQ, Microsoft confirmed that you can play back your movies and TV shows through the Movies & TV app on Windows PCs and Xbox consoles. While you can't transfer content to another platform, customers in the US can sync some movies through the Movies Anywhere program.

As for refunds, Microsoft will not be offering refunds for recent purchases due to its terms of sale, but the fact that the content is still viewable makes the risk of negative user reactions fairly low.

With this decision, Microsoft officially withdraws from the streaming market. Eight years ago, the company also surprised everyone by closing the Groove Music service (formerly Xbox Music), and now it's the movie store's turn. Microsoft recommends users switch to third-party services such as Prime Video, Apple TV, Netflix. to watch content on PC and Xbox.
