Google Search upgrades its AI Mode: Canvas can now write, plan, and program applications.
Google has just expanded the Canvas feature within Google Search's AI Mode . This workspace, powered by the Google Gemini AI model, which previously allowed users to create and edit documents, has now been upgraded to support programming projects and interactive tools.
With the new update, users can plan, code, and build small applications directly within the Google search interface, without having to switch to a separate code editor or programming environment.
AI Mode is Google's conversational search experience, where traditional results are replaced with AI-generated answers. In this mode, Canvas acts as a workspace alongside the search results, allowing users to create and edit content flexibly. Currently, Canvas in AI Mode has been rolled out to all users in the US with English language support.
Canvas now supports both content writing and programming.
Canvas appears as a side panel in AI Mode. Users can continue to improve their ongoing project through further commands sent to the AI.
If you want to create your own tool or dashboard, simply select the Canvas option in the AI Mode tools menu and describe what you want to build. Gemini will then automatically create a working prototype within the Canvas.
For example, users might request the creation of a simple web application, a calculator, or even a basic game. The AI will automatically generate the complete code and display it directly in Canvas.
Once the code is generated, you can review, edit, and continue to request Gemini to improve or extend its functionality. The system can assist in adding new features, finding and fixing bugs in the code, or explaining how each part of the code works.
Beyond programming, Canvas continues to support content writing tasks such as essay writing, report planning, and organizing study materials. Users can highlight a section of content and ask Gemini to expand on the idea, simplify the wording, or rearrange the structure of the text.
Additionally, AI can extract relevant information from the web and Google's knowledge graph to make content more complete and accurate. With Canvas, users can even plan and book trips using AI during their search.
With this update, Google is transforming Search into more than just a place to find information. It's gradually becoming a workspace where users can build projects, write content, and refine their ideas with the help of AI.
