Computers that are not connected to the internet can still be hacked
Typically, government organizations, the military, and large businesses often store top secret data on a computer completely isolated from the internet. This security method is called "air wrap", helps to reduce the risk of hacking or cyber attacks.
However, Israeli security researchers have successfully developed a new attack method targeting computers completely without an internet connection.
For the past half-decade Mordechai Guri, director of the research institute at Ben-Gurion Negev University, Israel, has focused on non-traditional cyber attacks. He has done dozens of studies on computer attack techniques that do not have an internet connection.
AIR-FI is the latest attack method Guri discovered. With this method, Guri can hack into computers completely isolated from the internet. The main goal of Guri is to find a way to get data in ways that no one expected, thereby increasing vigilance and preparedness for coping methods in all situations.
AIR-FI is based on the principle that all electronic devices emit electromagnetic waves when an electrical current is passed. WiFi is also a type of electromagnetic wave. Therefore, Mr. Guri said that just by adjusting the current inside the computer RAM so that it emits waves at the same frequency as the WiFi signal, hackers can penetrate the computer without going through an internet connection.
Of course, Mr. Guri also demonstrated his attack method. With certain read / write codes, he made RAM emit electromagnetic waves at the same frequency as WiFi. This wave can be received by a device with a WiFi antenna nearby such as smartphones, laptops, surveillance cameras and smartwatches .
Mr. Guri's early experiments showed that he could hack into and retrieve data from a computer completely isolated from the internet. The limitation of this attack method is that Mr. Guri has to have access to the computer and the data transmission speed is only 100b / s. According to him, to combat AIR-FI, the manager can install the WiFi breaker within the range of the air wrap system.
