Apple spent $ 18 million in compensation for 'breaking' FaceTime on old iPhones
Apple has agreed to pay $ 18 million in compensation to older iPhone owners in a class action lawsuit in California, USA.
According to iMore , in 2013 when Apple launched iOS 7, it changed the way FaceTime works, by moving to a new peer-to-peer standard that doesn't infringe patents from a company called VirnetX. This change has helped Apple master the entire FaceTime experience on its devices. However, this move has 'broken' the FaceTime feature on devices that cannot be upgraded to iOS 7.
And so it was sued by owners of the iPhone 4 or 4S series using iOS 6 for disrupting their experience on the device they paid for. Apple seems to have agreed to pay a $ 18 million compensation in a California class action lawsuit to address the issue.
According to the 9to5Mac report , 90% of the members involved in the case will receive compensation. And the condition to receive compensation is that older devices such as iPhone 4, iPhone 4S must be running on iOS 6 and not jailbroken.
Apple announced that it is developing and about to release iOS 14 in the upcoming WWDC, so hopefully this is the last lawsuit involving an iOS version that's over 6 years old.
