According to Mario Vesconi, president of the Chaco Astronomical Association, the meteor hit the land between Chaco and Santiago del Estero (in Argentina) during a meteor shower that occurred 4,000 years ago.
The original meteorite originated from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter , weighing about 800 tons. As it progressed to Earth, it split itself into many small meteorites, scattered over an area of about 320 square kilometers.
