6 Free Tools to Check If Your Passwords Have Been Compromised
With the number of data breaches occurring each year, it can be difficult to know if your perfect password is still safe. Even if you follow security measures and create strong, unique passwords for each account, a compromised password can still be exposed. That's why it's important to periodically check to see if your passwords have been compromised.
6. Have I Been Pwned?
One useful site to check if your password has been compromised is Have I Been Pwned, a comprehensive database of emails and passwords found in data breaches around the world.
At the time of writing, Have I Been Pwned stores information on 882 websites with nearly 15 billion accounts. Several major data breaches in recent years have been copycats (when scammers combine lists of large breaches).
However, this is a great tool to check if your account information has been breached. Type your email address into the search bar and hit pwned? to see if it shows up. If it does, check the breaches the account has been in (they appear below the search), then go there and change your password immediately.
While you're there, don't forget to sign up for notifications of future breaches involving your email address.
5. Enzoic Password Checker
Enzoic works the opposite of Have I Been Pwned. Instead of checking your email against a large database, it checks your password.
Conveniently, Enzoic's password checker also tells you how strong your potential password is using a visual guide. If a password has been compromised, the checker will notify you immediately. When you try the dreaded password 123456, it is immediately flagged.
On the security front, Enzoic states that 'Your password will be securely sent to our servers to check for compromise' and does not store your password.
4. Google Password Checker
Now, did you know that Google Chrome's built-in password manager has a tool to check for compromised passwords?
It's super simple to use. In Chrome, go to Settings > Password & Autofill > Google Password Manager. Then, select Check Passwords.
Chrome will show you every compromised, reused, and weak password, letting you know exactly which ones you need to tackle right away.
3. Apple iCloud Keychain Password Tracker Tool
Those using Apple iCloud Keychain can use a similar process to check all the passwords stored on devices associated with your iCloud account. The process is similar to Chrome's password checker, in that it lists compromised passwords in a specific section. From there, you can change any compromised or weak passwords.
How you access Keychain's password tracking feature will vary depending on which Apple device you're using.
- iOS/iPadOS: Go to Settings > Passwords > Security Recommendations.
- macOS: Go to System Settings > Passwords > Security Recommendations.
- Safari: Open Settings > Passwords.
In any case, you need to make sure that Detect Compromised Passwords is enabled. Once enabled, Keychain will automatically detect compromised passwords and alert you to any problems.
2. Check your password manager
The article listed this at the end because not everyone uses a password manager, although everyone absolutely should, especially since most of the best password managers are free.
This article won't attempt to detail how to monitor for compromised passwords in every password manager; that would be overkill. But a quick internet search for "[password manager name] check for compromised passwords" should point you in the right direction.
Since password managers generate strong, unique passwords for each account, you shouldn't have too many problems. However, it's always worth checking, especially if there's been a major data breach.
That said, even if you have a unique password, once it's been breached, you still need to change it.
1. Check your antivirus software
Many people rely on their operating system's built-in security suite these days. But those who have installed a third-party solution can also install a password checker as part of their security suite. For example, Kaspersky, Norton, Bitdefender, and other major antivirus tools all have built-in password managers and password checkers.
So if you have a third party antivirus installed, try checking that.
Stolen or compromised passwords are scary and dangerous, especially if you don't know where to start looking. However, with these tools, you can quickly identify any compromised passwords and begin replacing them with much stronger, more unique options. And best of all, all of these options are completely free, since great security doesn't have to cost you a fortune!
