How to check if your PC has been compromised by a botnet.

Is your PC being secretly turned into a 'mercenary machine' in a botnet? This free tool will check instantly.

The problem of hackers secretly infiltrating users' computers, routers, or network devices to turn them into part of a malicious botnet is not uncommon. If you're wondering what a botnet is, simply put, it's a network of computers or devices infected with malware and remotely controlled. From this network, cybercriminals launch attacks on websites or servers—such as DDoS attacks—or send mass spam and phishing emails.

The scary thing is that the owners of compromised devices are often completely unaware, unless they check the network traffic coming out of their system. But that requires expertise using analytics tools like Wireshark or Nmap. Fortunately, there's now a much simpler way, and it doesn't require any technical knowledge.

GreyNoise – a security company – offers a free online tool called GreyNoise IP Check . Simply open the website and you can instantly find out if your network IP address is linked to a botnet. The check takes less than a second and indicates whether any devices on your network are being remotely controlled or are participating in malicious activity. Importantly, you don't need to log in or enter any email address.

This tool divides the results into three groups:

  1. If the IP address is completely 'clean': no unusual scanning activity is detected.
  2. If flagged as 'malicious' or 'suspicious': that IP address has previously performed network scanning, and the user should check all devices in the system.
  3. If the IP address belongs to a VPN, enterprise, or cloud provider: That's normal behavior in this environment.

Note that this check only reflects the current IP status . For home users, IP addresses typically change periodically, unless you've registered for a static IP address – which is quite rare.

If you receive a 'malicious/suspicious' result, you should immediately use the latest updated antivirus software to check your entire computer. The developers also stated that the tool will display the first and last times unusual activity was observed, the type of behavior detected, and suggest steps to address it.

Finally, you should update the firmware to the latest version for all networked devices in your home – from smart TVs and security cameras to routers – to patch any newly discovered vulnerabilities. Also, change all passwords and access credentials, and disable remote control features if you don't need them.
