Windows users silently receiving Microsoft Bing Service 2.0 update cannot be uninstalled

Windows users around the world are simultaneously reporting a new and mysterious update that is being quietly pushed by Microsoft through Windows Update.

This new update is called "Microsoft Bing Service 2.0" and is classified as 'Quality Update'. Users on both Windows 11 and Windows 10 are getting it, so it's not a Windows 11-specific update 22H2 Insiders or something like that at all.

Microsoft briefly explains the functionality of Bing Service as follows:

"Bing Service allows you to retrieve search results from Bing. Bing can return web results and news in your language, images and videos for many countries/regions around the world."

So basically, Bing Service seems to be serving as the powering factor for Microsoft's Bing search engine, and maybe this 2.0 version will help improve that even more. Interestingly, when a user clicks the "Learn more" option next to an update (screenshot above), the default browser Bing page opens instead of the usual release notes website.

During the update download, a new folder named "BingSvc" will be created inside the Microsoft folder under Program Files(x86). This folder contains two files, one is BGAStartMSI.msi, and the other is BGAStartMSILauncher.exe.

Deskmodder site did some further research on this update via registry editing options, and found a large number of executable files inside a given bgaupdate folder:

  1. BDAStartMSI.exe
  2. BGAStartMSILauncher.exe
  3. BDAUpdatePack.exe
  4. BSvcInstaller.msi
  5. BSvcStartMSI.exe
  6. BWCStartMSI.exe

When the BWCStartMSI operating file was run to enable this feature, it was noticed that the desktop wallpaper was replaced by the Bing Wallpaper, as shown in the screenshot below.

It is worth mentioning that this Bing Service 2.0 update does not appear in the "Uninstall updates" list at all. This means that users will not be able to uninstall this update, in other words, Microsoft does not want users to uninstall the update. Therefore, it is more likely that Microsoft may be trying to introduce Bing Wallpapers to Windows users sooner than expected. Let's wait and see!
