Warning: New scam on Facebook to steal accounts, users need to take note

Security firm Malwarebyte recently warned users about a new scam to steal Facebook accounts.

Specifically, after taking over the fanpage of small and medium-sized enterprises, hackers will change the information to make it look like a Facebook support page. Then, the bad guys will tag the 'prey' in a post with a warning that the account will be locked if they do not follow the instructions.

The fake alert reads: "Your account will be disabled because someone has reported you for not complying with the terms of service. If you are the owner of the account and want to avoid being disabled, please verify your account by clicking the attached link. If you do not confirm within 12 hours, our system will automatically lock your account and you will not be able to use it."

When users click on the attached link, they will be taken to a fake login page that looks exactly like the Facebook login page. If users log in as requested, their account information will be 'stolen' to steal their account.

In fact, this trick is not new, but hackers constantly change the form, causing many gullible Facebook users to fall into the trap.

How to keep your Facebook account safe

Malwarebytes recommends that users can follow the following instructions to keep their Facebook accounts safe.

  1. Enable two-factor authentication on your account.
  2. Consider using a password manager.
  3. Set up login alerts so if someone tries to log in to your account from a new device, you'll get a notification.
  4. Be wary of random alerts about your account being locked. If you get one, you can always contact Facebook support directly to make sure it's real.
