According to experts, the water color changes because of Macarenia Clavigera, an endemic species of the Sierra de la Macarena - a mountain range located south of the capital Bogota, Colombia.

During the period from July to November (mid-rainy season to dry season), mosses, aquatic plants, corals and red Macarenia Clavigera trees cling to the rocks along the nearly 100 km long river, creating a colorful carpet from orange, red, yellow and blue just below the surface of the water creates a beautiful 'liquid rainbow'.
