Quake Champions is a free-to-play online arena shooter developed by id Software with Saber Interactive and published by Bethesda Softworks. It combines Quake's high movement speed, map control, rocket jumping, and weapon pickups with Champions that have different attributes and abilities.
The game entered Early Access in August 2017 and received its full Steam release on August 18, 2022. It remains listed as free to play, with optional in-game purchases and paid Platinum packs.
What makes Quake Champions different
Matches are decided by more than aim. Players must move efficiently, control powerful weapons, remember when health and armor items return, and choose fights from favorable positions. A player who knows the map can deny resources and survive even against an opponent with sharper raw aim.
Champions add variation without replacing those fundamentals. Each has unique attributes and an ability, but every player still needs to learn movement, weapon ranges, item timing, and positioning.
Main game modes
- Deathmatch: every player competes for eliminations.
- Team Deathmatch: two teams race for the stronger combined score.
- Duel: a focused 1v1 mode that emphasizes item control and opponent tracking.
- Sacrifice: a team objective mode built around controlling and delivering an item.
Additional playlists and limited modes can rotate. Check the current queue description before matchmaking.
Weapon roles
| Weapon type | Best use | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Rocket Launcher | Splash damage, area denial, close-to-mid fights, rocket jumps | Aiming only at the opponent instead of the floor or nearby surface |
| Lightning Gun | Continuous tracking damage at close-to-mid range | Holding it beyond effective range or while line of sight is unstable |
| Railgun | High-damage precision shots at long range | Remaining exposed while waiting for a second shot |
| Shotgun | Close-range bursts and finishing weak opponents | Using it across a large room |
| Machinegun | Reliable chip damage and finishing at range | Ignoring a stronger situational weapon nearby |
The strongest choice is the weapon that fits the current distance and geometry. Practice switching before entering a room rather than after the fight begins.

How to install Quake Champions
- Install Steam from Valve's official site and sign in.
- Open the Quake Champions Steam page.
- Select Play Game and choose an installation drive.
- Let Steam download and verify the files.
- Launch the game, complete the Bethesda.net account process if prompted, and choose a nearby data center when the option is available.

Six tips for new players
1. Keep moving
Standing still makes you an easy Railgun target. Learn smooth strafing first, then add strafe jumping and rocket jumping in a practice environment.
2. Pick up armor before chasing a fight
Extra armor and health effectively increase the number of mistakes you can survive. Route through useful items rather than running directly toward every sound.
3. Aim rockets at surfaces
Rocket splash can damage an opponent even when the projectile does not hit the model directly. Floors, walls, and door frames also let you block a route.
4. Match weapon to distance
Use Railgun sightlines at range, Lightning Gun when tracking is possible, and rockets where splash and geometry matter. One favorite weapon cannot solve every fight.
5. Listen for information
Weapon pickups, jumps, abilities, and item collection reveal position. Headphones can help, but keep volume at a safe level.
6. Learn one map at a time
Memorize the major health, armor, and weapon locations, then connect them into a route. Map knowledge improves aim opportunities because you can predict where opponents are going.
Free-to-play limits and purchases
Steam lists Quake Champions as free to play and notes in-game purchases, chat, and online interaction. Optional Platinum packs are not refundable under the store notice. Review the exact contents before purchasing; spending does not replace the movement and map skills that decide arena matches.
