Wuthering Waves Launch Roster: Roles and Team-Building Guide

The original Wuthering Waves launch roster includes several capable damage dealers, off-field attackers, and sustain characters. Instead of treating an old tier list as a permanent ranking, use each Resonator's role, team synergy, and required investment to decide who deserves your resources.

Scope: This guide covers characters available around the global launch period. It is not a ranking of every Resonator added in later versions.

Launch roster roles at a glance

Main damage dealer	Jiyan, Calcharo, Encore, Lingyang, Chixia, Danjin, Rover	Spend most of the field time dealing damage. Their preferred supports and rotations differ.

Some Resonators can fill more than one role. Rover and Danjin, for example, can be played as the main damage dealer or as part of a quick-swap team. Jianxin combines shielding, healing, grouping, and personal damage, although she may need more field time than a dedicated healer.

Notable launch characters

Verina: efficient healing and team buffs

Verina is valuable because she can heal and support the whole team without occupying the field for long. That makes her easy to place alongside many main damage dealers. She is a strong investment, but she is not mandatory for story progress.

Baizhi: accessible sustain

Baizhi is the early healing option available to every account. Her rotation is less compact than Verina's, yet she can keep a team alive through story encounters and early endgame stages. Build enough Energy Regeneration to use her Resonance Liberation consistently.

Jiyan: straightforward Aero main DPS

Jiyan specializes in sustained damage during his Resonance Liberation. He works particularly well with teammates who support Heavy Attack damage or contribute from off field. Players who prefer a clear setup-and-burst rotation may find him easier to use than quick-swap damage dealers.

Calcharo and Encore: strong damage with stricter execution

Calcharo can produce high Electro damage, but interrupted combos and poorly timed swaps reduce his output. Encore is a Fusion damage dealer whose ranged basic attacks and burst window offer a different play style. Both benefit from a team that can protect their important attack sequences.

Mortefi and Sanhua: focused offensive support

Mortefi adds coordinated attacks and is especially useful with teammates who perform frequent Heavy Attacks. Sanhua has a short field-time rotation and can amplify Basic Attack damage for the next character. Choose between them according to the main DPS rather than a universal tier.

Jianxin, Yangyang, Yuanwu, Aalto, and Taoqi: situational utility

Jianxin offers grouping, a shield, healing, and interruption resistance, making her flexible but sometimes slower to rotate.
Yangyang groups smaller enemies and helps the next character recover Resonance Energy.
Yuanwu provides coordinated Electro damage and helps reduce enemy Vibration Strength with limited field time.
Aalto can support Aero damage and create a decoy while contributing ranged attacks.
Taoqi supplies defensive utility and can support Resonance Skill-focused damage, though her rotation is more specialized.

How to build a balanced three-character team

Start with a primary damage dealer. Pick the character whose play style and weapon you can support consistently.
Add a compatible second slot. Look at Outro Skill buffs, coordinated attacks, energy needs, and how much field time each character requires.
Add sustain. A healer or shielder makes difficult encounters more reliable. Once mechanics are familiar, some teams can trade defense for more damage.

A team of individually strong characters can still perform poorly if their buffs do not affect one another or if every member needs long field time. Read each Intro and Outro Skill, then order the rotation so the intended damage dealer receives the relevant buff.

What matters more than a tier label

Weapon and Echo quality: A well-built accessible character can outperform an under-equipped premium character.
Sequence investment: Duplicate copies can change a Resonator's performance or rotation.
Enemy mechanics: Elemental resistance, stagger windows, and multi-target encounters favor different kits.
Player execution: Dodges, parries, animation cancels, and correct swaps affect real results.
Game mode: Fast overworld clearing and timed endgame stages do not reward exactly the same qualities.

New characters, weapons, and balance changes can shift team priorities.
