Dead Frontier 2 is a free-to-play, third-person survival-horror MMO for Windows. Players scavenge abandoned buildings, manage limited supplies, improve a character build, trade with other players, cooperate in PvE, or enter PvP areas. The current Steam release is dated July 15, 2019; the earlier article's “just released” framing is no longer useful.
The game is free to install but includes in-app purchases, online chat, and a required third-party Dead Frontier 2 account. It also contains frequent violence, gore, and other mature material described on the store page, so check the content information before playing.
What you do in Dead Frontier 2
- Explore streets and procedurally arranged interiors for weapons, ammunition, medicine, clothing, and other supplies.
- Complete survivor missions and decide which risks are worth the reward.
- Choose skills and equipment that support a focused character build.
- Trade through a player-driven economy.
- Play alone, cooperate online, or participate in optional PvP.
- Conserve ammunition and healing items rather than treating every room as a fast shooter encounter.
The game is built around scarcity. A powerful weapon is not automatically useful if its ammunition is rare or the character cannot support its handling and damage requirements.

Beginner survival tips
Search quietly
Listen before entering a room and avoid sprinting into an unexplored corridor. Fighting one infected in a doorway is safer than attracting several enemies in an open space.
Match ammunition to a plan
Carry weapons you can feed with the ammunition found or purchased at a reasonable cost. Save high-value rounds for dangerous enemies and use melee attacks only when the risk of taking damage is acceptable.
Keep inventory space available
An inventory filled with low-value items prevents you from taking medicine, ammunition, or a valuable equipment drop. Compare an item's usefulness and market value before keeping every find.
Build around a role
Read skill descriptions and choose a coherent direction—such as a weapon class, looting efficiency, or survivability. Scattering early points among unrelated bonuses can make the character weak at every task.
Return before greed becomes a loss
Once health, ammunition, or space is low, leave and secure the haul. One extra room is not worth losing time and consumables to a preventable defeat.
Solo, co-op, and PvP
Co-op can make difficult areas more manageable, but players should agree on pace and loot expectations. Use in-game communication without sharing account details or personal information.
PvP introduces risk from other players in addition to the infected. Check the current zone rules before entering and bring only equipment you are willing to use there. A build effective against slow PvE enemies may not perform the same way against a human opponent.
Is Dead Frontier 2 completely free?
The base game is free to play on Steam. The store page lists in-app purchases, so optional paid content exists. Free-to-play does not mean every cosmetic or convenience feature is included; review the exact offer and price inside the official client before purchasing.
