After a 'research beta' phase in May, OpenAI has just officially launched the final version of Codex — a cloud-based automated programming tool. Since then, Codex has been continuously updated, notably the GPT-5-Codex released in September, which is optimized for 'aggressive coding' capabilities.
At DevDay 2025, OpenAI announced that Codex is ready for widespread deployment and has entered the official commercial phase.
A huge leap forward in performance and application level
According to OpenAI, daily Codex usage has increased tenfold since August, with GPT-5-Codex alone processing 40 trillion tokens in just three weeks. The tool is rapidly being integrated into a variety of software engineering workflows.
To celebrate its official launch, OpenAI is also introducing three new features aimed at improving productivity for engineering and developer teams.
1. Integrate Codex into Slack
The first feature is the integration of Codex into Slack, allowing users to assign tasks directly in the chat channel simply by tagging @Codex. The AI will automatically understand the context of the conversation and execute the task on the Codex Cloud platform for you.
Users still have full control over whether to accept or reject the code merge generated by the AI.
2. Codex SDK development toolkit
OpenAI is also introducing the Codex SDK — a toolkit that allows developers to integrate the same 'programming agent' running on the Codex CLI into their own applications or workflows with just a few lines of code.
The Codex SDK provides well-structured output for easy analysis of AI responses, and supports context management for seamless continuation of previous sessions. The
SDK is currently available for TypeScript, with support for more languages coming soon.
3. Codex Admin Panel in ChatGPT
Finally, OpenAI is updating Codex administration rights for ChatGPT users, helping to manage data and work environments more securely. Specifically, administrators can:
- Set safe defaults,
- Delete sensitive data,
- Clean up unused environments,
- Track performance through analytics dashboard.
Implementation roadmap and target users
The first two features — Slack integration and Codex SDK — are now available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Edu, and Enterprise users.
Meanwhile, the new admin feature will only be available on Business, Edu, and Enterprise plans.
If you haven't seen it yet, OpenAI also announced new app integrations and SDKs in ChatGPT at today's event — promising to usher in a new generation of AI tools that are more flexible and 'self-aware' than ever before.
