Never upgrade the operating system from the first day

Gone are the days when we could use a quiet operating system for years.

Gone are the days when we could use a quiet operating system for years. Windows 10 is now updated every 6 months and the route makes everything as peaceful as before. Even Apple has updated the iPhone with all sorts of annoyances.

The more updates, the more problems

Microsoft retracted the Windows 10 October 2018 update Update because it deleted user data, but that was just one of many problems, because previous updates also had its own problems. Anniversary Update makes many webcams useless, it must be patched a month later. This update also causes many devices to have a blue screen error when connected to a Kindle device. When updating Windows 10, there are also reports of hardware-related issues.

Apple also struggled with updates. iOS 11.1 does not allow users to type 'i'. iOS 9.0 makes many people stuck on Slide to Updrage screen. iOS 8.0.1 causes mobile network connection error and Touch ID.

On Pixel phones, Android updates make unlocking and charging phones slower. Everyone has trouble.

First beta: just a beta version

Companies like Microsoft or Apple have test versions to find bugs before releasing a stable version. Microsoft has the Insider Preview program, and Apple has the beta for developers and the public. Google has a beta program for Android.

But whatever the reason, serious errors still leak. Nearly the occurrence of errors has become indispensable. The first stable version always feels like an extension of the beta test.

Second beta: go on stage

When the new stable version is installed soon, you are also a type of beta tester. For example, when launching the stable version of Windows 10, Microsoft slowly released to a few users, see the parameters to know how the OS works in practice. Microsoft will fix the problem before releasing the next release and may take several months.

Think carefully before you want to make OS updates available soon

Windows Update can randomly select updates. But if you go to Settings and select Check for Updates, you will be updated as you like. With October 2018 Update, too, if you do not proactively ask for updates, do not encounter every reported error.

What about those who unfortunately have errors? Voluntarily acting as tester should have to solve it yourself.

On Android too, Google will automatically update the Pixel gradually over a few weeks, but if you choose Check for Updates, you will be updated immediately.

Even Linux. Canonical also did not allow Ubuntu to be stable for a long time if a new patch was released. Anyone who installs a new Ubuntu LTS also becomes a tester.

Apple is slightly different, they release iOS and macOS to everyone at the same time

Third beta: full for users

Even if updates are released to all users, this 'stable' version is still a beta type. You are a tester for companies that need stable copies. Microsoft and Apple will postpone updates for these companies, for normal users to use first.

With Windows 10 Professional, you can postpone updating for up to 120 days. After 4 months, it must be stable after all. Windows 10 Pro also selects many updated 'channels', defaulting to 'Semi-Annual Channel (Targeted)', then 'Semi-Annual Channel'.

In the Settings section, if the update channel is Targeted, the machine will be updated when 'ready for most users', and if' Semi-Annual Channel 'is updated when' ready for widespread use in organizations'.

The difference is that updates 'available to most users' will still contain errors. When every error consumers encounter has been processed, they will update the business. Companies can also choose a more stable version of Windows 10 by selecting the new LTSB (Long-term Servicing Branch) for a few years to update once.

Apple, too, postponed the iOS update for up to 90 days so they have more time to fix the error.

Why is there such a thing?

Gone are the days of using Windows XP Service Pack 2 for 4 or 5 years. Companies want their OS to be full of features and constantly innovate, running after websites or cloud services constantly changing.

But OS is very complicated, not just a website but also about hardware and software. Windows PC has many models and types of software. They are not like phones and the problem encountered when updating is normal. Even Apple, just updating every iPhone, was also inevitable.

This is nothing new. Previously, sysadmin used to say when waiting for Service Pack 2 to be installed, install OS. Now OS updates every 6 months.

What should you do?

Security updates are very important, and having trouble does not mean you should not update at all. But be cautious. When Windows 10 updates, don't Check for Updates in a hurry. Please wait a week or two to see if something serious is reported. If using Windows 10 Pro, consider delaying the update for several weeks so that Windows does not automatically install the update.

When Apple releases OS for iPhone, iPad or Mac, wait a few days, let others try to see if there is an error, you will avoid having to downgrade the machine because the new OS is too bad. So is Android.

Data backup

Error of October 2018 Update data deletion is a reminder to users should always back up data. Even if you are using the device, have a backup to prevent it when there is a problem. Not only updating the OS, can updating software, malware or power overloading can make your data go away.

The phone is less serious. By default, iPhone is backed up on iCloid, and Android also backs up to Google's servers. But if you are worried, you can still back up all data.
