Microsoft started deploying new Edge on Windows 10 this week
The era of the old version of Edge and the traditional Internet Explorer will end when Microsoft starts deploying Edge Chromium to Windows 10, completely replacing the two above mentioned browser platforms this week.
As usual, the new Edge version will still be sent to users via Windows Update, but not 100% of Windows users will get a new browser, depending on their system configuration.
In a recent announcement, Microsoft said it would not push Edge Chromium to everyone in a "forced" fashion. Instead, Windows 10 users will have complete control over whether to update and use Edge Chromium.
Windows 10 PCs running on Home and Pro versions will be offered Edge Chromium through Windows Update. In other words, Windows Update will automatically download the new browser to your computer and install it as the system's default browser, replacing the old Edge and Internet Explorer, you will not have to do anything.
Note, Edge Chromium will be sent to the system via a standalone update rather than included in a regular Windows 10 cumulative update. An update containing Edge Chromium will be released starting January 15, while the cumulative update January 2020 cumulative update will arrive on January 14. Please note not to confuse the two updates.
In addition, Edge Chromium will only be sent to devices running on Windows 10 November 2019 Update, May 2019 Update, October 2018 Update and April 2018 Update.
Could deny the Edge Chromium update
If you are still satisfied with the older version of Edge and Internet Explorer, or simply do not want to use Edge Chromium, you can use the "Blocker Toolkit" and block the installation of Edge Chromium from Windows Update.
You can still download and manually install Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 Home, Pro or Enterprises. Simultaneously, you can install and use multiple versions of Edge Chromium like Canary or Dev.
In particular, you can also use both versions of Microsoft Edge at the same time on Windows 10.
