How to use Keynote Remote to control remote presentations

Before start

Keynote Remote is included in the latest versions of Keynote for iOS. To use Keynote Remote, you need an installed iOS device Keynote 2.1 or later and a Mac with Keynote 6.1 or later.

Before using the Keynote Remote, make sure you have the latest Keynote version on your Mac and iOS devices. For best results, update your iOS device to the latest iOS version.

Before you can use the Keynote Remote for your presentation, you need to link the remote control device to a Mac or other iOS device.

Link Remote Keynote to your Mac

Use the following steps to link the Keynote Remote to your Mac:

  1. Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled on both your Mac and iOS device.
  2. On your Mac, open your presentation in Keynote.
  3. Select Keynote> Preferences .
  4. Select the Remotes tab.
  5. Select the option to Enable .
  6. On your iOS device, open the Keynote application.
  7. Click on the Keynote Remote icon in the toolbar of Presentation manager . If you are in a presentation, press Presentations in the toolbar to open Presentation manager. Vertical on smaller devices, tap the < icon.
  8. If this is the first time you try connecting to Remote Keynote, click Continue . If this is not the first time you linked to Remote Keynote, click the Devices button. Then, click " Add a Device ".
  9. On your Mac, click the Link button next to your iOS device name. It will appear in the Remotes menu.
    1. Older iOS devices, older Macs and older versions of Keynote require you to connect to the same Wi-Fi network. If you don't see your device, check your Wi-Fi settings to make sure both your Mac and iPhone, iPad or iPod touch are connected to the same network.
    2. Keynote Remote does not work on a network that is hosted on a Mac using Internet Sharing or a network hosted by an iOS device using Personal Hotspot .
  10. Compare a 4-digit passcode that appears on your Mac with a passcode appearing on your iOS device. If they match, click Confirm .
  11. To control the slideshow on your computer from an iOS device, press Play on the iOS device .

Link Keynote Remote with other iOS devices

Use the following steps to link your remote control device to another iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

  1. Turn on Wi-Fi on both of your devices.
    1. If you are using Keynote for iOS 2.5 and above and both of your iOS devices have Lightning connectors, your device is not required to connect to a specific Wi-Fi network. You can also use Bluetooth to connect your device (see later).
    2. If you are using an older version of Keynote on both devices or if the device has a connector dock (iPhone 4s, iPad 2 and iPad 3rd generation), make sure both devices are connected to the same a Wi-Fi network.
    3. As mentioned above, Keynote Remote does not work on a network hosted by a Mac server using Internet Sharing or a network hosted by an iOS device using Personal Hotspot .
  2. On the device you are using for your presentation, open the presentation.
  3. Click on the Tools icon on the toolbar.
  4. Click Presentation Tools .
  5. Click Allow Remote Control .
  6. Enable Enable Remotes .
  7. On the device you want to use as a remote control, open the Keynote application.

  10. On the device that displays the presentation, next to the name of the device you are using as the remote control, click Link . The device name will appear in the Allow Remote Control menu.
  11. Similarly, compare the 4-digit password that appears on the presentation device with the passcode that appears on the remote control device. If matched, press Confirm .
  12. On the presentation device, click Done to return to the presentation.
  13. To control slideshow on presentation device, press Play on the controlling device .

If the Play button on your remote control device is not responding, make sure you have enabled Remotes mode on the remote control device by following steps 2–6 above for the device.

Use Remote Keynote with Bluetooth

If you cannot connect to Wi-Fi, you can use the Remote Keynote with Bluetooth to control the presentation from an iOS device to another iOS device (but cannot do this from a Mac). Slides may take longer to appear on Keynote Remote when connected using Bluetooth. If you use iOS 7 on a remote control device, you cannot use it to control presentations via Bluetooth on devices using iOS 8 and above.

Use Keynote Remote

After you link the Keynote Remote to your computer or iOS device, follow the steps below to control your slideshow:

  1. Open a presentation on your Mac or presentation device.
  2. On the Keynote Remote device, touch the Keynote Remote icon in the toolbar in Presentation manager. If you are in a presentation, press Presentations in the toolbar to open Presentation manager.
  3. It may take several seconds for your remote device to connect. After being connected, your remote control device will display the Play button.
  4. Click Play .
  5. Your slideshow will appear on the remote control device. Swipe in both directions to move to the next slide or previous slide.
  6. For more layout options, click the Layout icon on your remote control device. Other options include:
    1. Current : Displays the current build / slide on your remote control device.
    2. Next : Display the next build / slide on your remote control device.
    3. Current and Next : Displays both current and next builds / slides side by side.
    4. Current and Notes : Display existing slides / slides and notes for that slide side by side.
    5. Next and Notes : Display the next slide / slide and make notes for that slide side by side.
  7. To end the slideshow, touch the close button ( X ) or swipe down with two fingers.

Some other notes

  1. Before starting the slideshow, you should turn on Do Not Disturb mode on your Mac and iOS device.
  2. You can use Keynote Remote to control playback in Keynote Live.
  3. You can also use AirPlay to show your presentation from Keynote to Apple TV.
  4. In your presentation, use Highlighter to highlight or point out parts of the slide. The iOS device you use as a remote control needs Keynote for iOS 2.2 and above. The device you control with a remote control needs Keynote for iOS 2.2 and above or Keynote for Mac 6.2 and above.
