If you've spent a lot of time in Minecraft visiting and trading in a single village, you've likely become attached to the NPCs in that town. Luckily, there's a great way to make your NPCs special and help them stand out from other similar characters: using name tags. Here's everything you need to know about name tags in Minecraft.

What are name tags in Minecraft?

Name tags are items that, when placed on an NPC, give them a unique name. The name you assign will appear above the NPC's head whenever you approach and look at them.

Naming NPCs also prevents them from ever disappearing. This means that if you rename a random zombie in the cave, it will stay there forever, even if you leave and never return. However, renamed NPCs can still die, at which point you will lose that name tag.

Unlike most things in Minecraft, you can't craft name tags. You have to find or trade for them. This can be time-consuming if you don't know where to find Minecraft name tags.

However, don't worry, the guide below will help you earn name tags in Minecraft more easily.

Materials needed to make name tags in Minecraft

Ingredient Quantity How to get
Any piece of metal (iron, gold, or copper) 1 Manufactured from any suitable metal ingot.
Paper 1 Made from 3 sugarcane stalks.
Fabrication table 1 Made from 4 pieces of wood.

You can obtain any piece of metal from the corresponding metal ingots. To obtain these three metals, go to the cave or simply use a pickaxe to dig the ground for ore.

Next, you can go to the riverbank or near the beach to find sugarcane. Break off three pieces of sugarcane with your hands and place them on the crafting table to obtain paper. Finally, you will need a crafting table to combine all the materials together.

You can use Name Tags to name mobs in Minecraft. However, naming mobs requires a few steps:

  2. Now, place the name tag in the leftmost box and enter the new name in the text box above.
