How does the ranking of the most popular websites over the past 2 decades changed?

In the late 1990s, the Internet and websites began to become popular. In 1996, the famous website with the most visitors was AoL (American Online), the website that provided the best search and email services at that time. AoL can be considered then like Google in the last years of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. Yahoo and MSN (The Microsoft Network) provided by Microsoft ranked in second and third place. Excite, Lycos, Netscape, Am Greetings, Amazon, Infoseek, Altavista, respectively.

By 1999, AoL was still firmly in the first place and kept quite a distance from competitors. However, at this time Yahoo was surpassed by MSN. Ranked fourth and fifth are Lycos and Amazon.

In 2000, Yahoo had a rapid growth. By 2001, Yahoo had taken the top spot from AoL. The third and fourth place are MSN and eBay. Also this year, Google entered the top of the most popular websites.

By 2006, Google, with more than 5.7 billion traffic, surpassed Yahoo to take first place in the ranking of the most popular websites.

In 2007, Facebook and Youtube began to participate in the 'race' with position 6 and 8.

In late 2008, Yahoo rose to regain the top position, pushing Google down to second place. Facebook, Yahoo, AoL, MSN, Ask, Amazon, Yandex, MySpace and Wikipedia ranked in the next position.

However, two years later, Yahoo's 'form' began to decline as the number of users continued to decline. Meanwhile, both Google, Facebook and Youtube are thriving with the number of users increasing rapidly.

In February 2018, something unexpected happened when the list of the 11 most popular websites featured two adult movie websites, Pornhub and Xvideo.

By October 2019, Google remained in the top position, Youtube and Facebook ranked second and third. Baidu, Wikipedia, Twitter, Instagram, Yahoo, Xvideo, Yandex and PornHub are followed.
