Google's $ 1.1 billion deal, buying almost all of HTC's mobile design division, was officially closed.
Google's $ 1.1 billion deal, buying almost all of HTC's mobile design division, was officially closed.
Rick Ostertoh, vice president of hardware, announced the news officially on a blog post, welcoming 'extremely talented team to create better, more creative products in the coming years'.
After this deal, there will be more than 2000 HTC engineers moving to Google. Osterloh said that they will all stay in Taiwan, Taipei will be the most concentrated place for Google engineers in East Asia. Production and VR departments are not affected but a large part of R&D groups will join Google.
Google is investing more in manufacturing equipment
The deal shows that Google is trying to expand its attack on the hardware market, and the obvious product that these engineers will start working with is Pixel smartphones.
Google is still just a small player in the smartphone market, but Pixel phones have been geared towards the high-end segment and competing with market leaders like Apple or Samsung.
