Google is trying to prevent and limit the display of fake news on its search engine.
Alphabet Company is making some extensive, rare changes to Google's search engine algorithm to minimize display of deceptive and misleading articles and negatively affect public opinion. In addition, Google also set up new rules with the participation of more than 10,000 employees who evaluate search results, to flag fake websites and contain content that the company thinks " low quality ".
The moves took place just months after Google and Facebook received criticism about providing misleading information, especially after the 2016 presidential election. Google executives claim that the types of websites categorized in this group are relatively small, which is why huge searchers have not resolved this issue before.
Ben Gomes, Google's vice president of engineering, said: " It's not a large part of queries - only about a quarter of traffic - but it's important queries . "
While Facebook faces the rapid spread of fake news on social networks, Google is criticized for its results that contain fake information at the top of search results. For example, last month's search query, " Obama has a coup plan, " the top search results offer a series of wrong articles and Google has extracted a piece of text in that article to provide grant quick answers to users. Gomes used this as an example of the results of finding changes that are " hidden " meaning.
Ben Gomes , Google's vice president of engineering, said: " We've highlighted low quality content in search results ."
In addition, Google is applying a new search ranking algorithm for the " auto-complete " function to suggest search queries based on popularity. Some automatic suggestions that are considered offensive will be removed. Google said it is also building a feature that allows searchers to flag and provide feedback for these cases.
Earlier this month, Google introduced a tool that allows publishers to check posts in their search rankings. These new changes were applied to the Google search ranking core algorithm and were conducted in an internal group called " Project Owl " since December.
In recent years, Google has been working hard to ensure that there is no false information when it comes to seeking personal and financial health. Now, news will be the next area Googe cares about.
" Until recently, we thought we didn't need to do it with news because news often comes from highly authoritative sites ," Gomes said.
