Many people have been using the paid version of Claude for a while now, and it has become one of their most trusted AI tools. But while they enjoy using it, they still value their privacy. During the app setup and while making changes, there are some options in Claude that will make you pause and think.
Claude tracks users.
While exploring Claude's privacy settings, one option immediately caught my attention: Location metadata. You don't need Claude to know your location, yet this setting is enabled by default. To be fair, Claude is very transparent about why it collects this information, stating that location data can be used to improve certain product experiences.
That makes perfect sense for people who regularly use Claude to find local information. The problem is, not everyone does. If they need to find a nearby coffee shop, get directions, or get a weather update, some people almost always use Google Search or Maps. If you don't rely on Claude for location-based responses, then enabling Location Metadata doesn't offer much value. Here's how you can turn it off:
- Open the Claude app on your phone or computer.
- Tap your profile icon, then select Settings .
- Select Privacy .
- In the Preferences section , find Location Metadata and turn it off.
Even if you decide to leave it on, it's always a good idea to understand its function and whether you'll actually benefit from it.
Options to improve Claude's AI models
Right below the Location Metadata toggle button, there's another setting that will immediately catch your attention. Claude has a feature called Help Improve Claude , which is enabled by default, that uses your conversations to improve the service. But many people find it unnecessary.
So, after disabling Location Metadata, they also disabled Help Improve Claude. For them, it was about controlling where their data was stored and how it was used. If you feel the same way, this is another setting worth checking out.
Claude has his own version.
Now, many people turn to Claude for things they don't want to share elsewhere. It could be personal thoughts, sensitive questions, work-related discussions, or simply conversations they want to keep private from their regular chat history. There's no judgment here — everyone uses AI differently.
If you're one of those people, this article strongly recommends trying Incognito mode. This mode is designed for those times when you want an extra layer of separation between your conversations and your daily activities on Claude.
The good news is that activating this mode only takes a second. Open a new chat in Claude and click the Incognito icon in the upper right corner. Once you've done that, you can start chatting in Incognito mode. Even if you don't use it every day, it's still a feature worth knowing about. You might not need it often, but when you do, you'll be glad it's available.
Memory saves you from having to explain things twice.
Unlike privacy settings that are turned off, this is a feature you should keep on. In fact, it might be the most useful setting in Claude depending on how people use it.
Of course, this is one of those settings that is entirely dependent on personal preference. What works for others may not work for you. If you don't want your conversations contributing to Claude's memory, you can easily turn this feature off. Here's how:
- Open Claude and go to Settings .
- Select Capabilities .
- In the Preferences section , find Generate memory from chat history .
- Turn the switch off.
This is probably the only setting on this list that doesn't have a clear right or wrong answer. It simply depends on whether you want Claude to remember you or treat you like a stranger whenever you start a new conversation.
Customize Claude to your liking.
People have spent a lot of time using Claude and experimenting with almost every feature it offers. It's now easily become one of the most popular AI tools. At the same time, many people are also very mindful of privacy settings. Not because they have something to hide, but because they want to know what information they're sharing and why. Taking a few minutes to review and adjust those settings to suit your personal preferences will give you much more confidence in the tools you use daily.
What many people appreciate most is that Claude truly empowers users. It lets you decide how much data you want to share, which features you want to enable, and how you want the service to work. That level of control isn't something every app can offer, and that's one of the reasons so many people enjoy using Claude.
