Apple's new smart display could launch in 2025
Apple could be preparing to release a new smart display as early as 2025. Additionally, the report suggests that Apple Intelligence will play a central role in the new devices.
Both smart displays are likely to be equipped with Apple Intelligence
The main differences between the two products seem to come down to cost, availability, and functionality. The more budget-friendly option, the J490, is set to be released sometime in 2025. Its primary uses will include making FaceTime calls and controlling smart devices. Functionality for apps like Calendar, Notes, and of course Apple Home will also be included.
The J595, on the other hand, will be more expensive and will be released at a later date. Confirmed features include a robotic arm and a larger display. However, Apple has yet to release a full list of features or clarify the benefits of the J595 over the J490. Users will have to be patient for a few more months until things become a little clearer.
A whole new operating system
What's clear, at least according to Bloomberg, is that both products are expected to ship with a brand new operating system called homeOS. This new operating system will be based on the current tvOS (with the two operating systems likely to eventually merge). So why would there be a need for a brand new operating system instead of just rolling out a software update for Apple's current smart home lineup?
That's largely because the Apple TV, HomePod, and HomePod mini aren't devices that can run Apple Intelligence. These new products will solve that problem. There are also rumors that Apple may include some kind of magnetic system to attach the new devices to walls or other surfaces.
Apple is trying to put AI in every home
These new displays prove that Apple wants to bring AI to every smart home. When and to what extent remains to be seen. But Apple Intelligence is definitely moving deeper into the smart home.
It will be interesting to see how Apple plans to integrate its AI into the current smart home landscape. But perhaps more intriguing is the knowledge that other smart home manufacturers will likely follow suit. It's an exciting prospect, and one that could usher in some welcome changes to the smart home experience as a whole.
