6 foods should not be reheated in the microwave
Reheating food in the microwave is a common habit. But do you know that some foods recommended by a dietitian should be eaten immediately and not reheated? Doing so in many cases can make you sick.
" Reheating food is a good way to save money in most cases ," said nutrition expert Brigitte Zeitlin. "But there are some foods that can be dangerous when heated, especially when you don't store them properly (in a sealed container and the right temperature) before."
For these foods , microwaves are not the problem. But it is the temperature change from the process you cook them, until you cool them down and reheat them. Here are 6 such food cases, intending to heat them up that could be dangerous to your health :
1. Potato
" Potatoes may be the cause of a poisoning, when they are cooked but then cooled to room temperature before you reheat them ," Zeitlin said.
" By letting potatoes cool to room temperature, a bacterium called Botulism can grow. So once you don't intend to eat it right away, it's best to store your potatoes in the refrigerator immediately after cooked them ". Reheating potatoes that have been well preserved in the refrigerator does not cause further problems.
2. Chicken
Chicken can be reheated, but you have to be a little wary of putting it in the microwave. Make sure the chicken pieces are completely warmed from the inside out. "It's inside ," Zeitlin said. Microwaves sometimes do not heat up the entire portion of the food, meaning there are still bacteria living in the chicken pieces, if it is not well cooked.
3. Rice
If the rice has cooled to room temperature, it may contain bacterial spores . After that, they can proliferate and cause poisoning, according to the British National Health Agency (NHS). In this case, the microwave does not kill the bacteria, so it is best to eat rice right after cooking. Or you can use a potato-like way, put them right into the refrigerator from the time you cook it until it is reheated.
4. Mushrooms
" Mushrooms are the next food that should not be heated ," Zeitlin said. " Mushrooms can irritate the stomach after they are reheated. The reason comes from their special micronutrients. Therefore, it's best to eat mushrooms immediately after cooking ."
Also, bacteria can grow on mushrooms when you let them cool to room temperature.
5. Oily fried food
All oils can only tolerate a certain amount of heat. If this limit is exceeded, they will produce gas and toxins known as free radicals. We all know that free radicals are the cause of many diseases, including cancer.
Therefore, avoid reheating foods that are high in oil . The microwave can burn oil again when it gets too hot.
6. Breast milk
If you are taking care of your baby, breast milk is a better source of nutrients. But don't store them and reheat them in the microwave. Research has shown that breastmilk warming in a microwave has uneven heat spots, which can burn babies' mouths.
In short, when reheating food, make sure they are cooked evenly at high temperatures. Make sure no bacteria or fungi survive and grow. One more thing, do not eat any excess food, if they have been kept for more than 3 days.
