Windows 11 adds new feature 'hey, copilot!', what's interesting?

Microsoft has just rolled out a notable new feature for the Copilot app on Windows 11, allowing users to activate the AI assistant with just the voice command "Hey, Copilot!" - similar to the previous Cortana experience on Windows 10 or Windows Phone. This is a notable upgrade after Microsoft added Copilot Vision on previous Insider builds.

In terms of how it works, this feature is basically similar to the utilities that wake up virtual assistants with commands that we are familiar with, including:

  1. Air-tactile activation : Instead of pressing the Alt + Space key combination (added in March), users can now summon Copilot by voice.
  2. On-device processing : Windows 11 uses local processing to recognize the wake word, and does not send recordings to the cloud when the feature is enabled.
  3. Instant Feedback : Upon successful activation, Copilot will play a chime or greeting and display a voice interface at the bottom of the screen.

To enable this feature, Windows 11 users just need to follow these steps:

  1. Open Copilot app → Click on avatar in bottom left corner.
  2. Select Settings → Scroll to Voice mode .
  3. Enable the " Listen for 'Hey, Copilot' to start a conversation " option

Note that "Hey, Copilot" is an optional feature, so it will be turned off by default to ensure privacy. Users need to actively activate it (following the steps outlined above) if they need to use it. In addition, this feature can also be quickly turned off by pressing the X button, or users can simply say nothing for a few seconds to exit voice mode.

The "Hey, Copilot" feature is now rolling out gradually to Windows Insiders across all channels, starting with version 1.25051.10.0 and later. Microsoft warns that the update process may take some time depending on your device.

With this move, Microsoft continues to perfect the integrated AI experience on Windows 11, balancing convenience and security. This is also a signal that Copilot is gradually completely replacing the legacy of Cortana.
