What is Internet of Robotic Things?
Although industrial robots and robots shaped like humans have emerged since the sixties, the beginning of the IoT really accelerates their development. Today's robots are far superior to their predecessors in terms of processing ability, self-study skills and, above all, their ability to connect with other objects.
When the field of robotics research is integrated with next-generation information technologies, the resulting model will form a separate field of research.
Therefore, 'Internet of Robotic Things' (IoRT) can be defined as an emerging science, simply adding a class of robot systems to existing smart IoT devices and sensors. This has been visualized in the diagram shown below.
The concept of IoRT
Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT) is a fairly new idea. The earliest detailed analysis of this concept was found in an IEEE research paper in 2016, conducted by Partha Pratim Ray. This study includes some core principles that any IoRT architecture must follow, that is:
- Can be combined: All IoRT architectures must be complied with to support web services. Therefore, all complex applications and designs should be published on the web.
- Context awareness: Since we are working with robots, the IoRT architecture requires knowledge of the surrounding context.
- The IoRT architecture must be scalable, interactive, dynamic, and self-adaptive.
Since IoT is the biggest support tool for IoRT systems, every action of a robot must be understood in such a way that IoT objects will serve them.
For example, in the diagram above, a series of wall-mounted cameras (IoT objects) are helping robots select charging stations. So, when you order the battery to charge your speaker or smartphone, the robot will use the image provided from the connected camera to locate the charging socket.
Therefore, in this case, IoT devices and WiFi connectivity are helping robots make better decisions themselves.
IoRT applications
According to research estimates, IoRT is growing at a steady and profitable rate when it comes to business of $ 21 billion in 2022. Major demand comes from Industrial Internet of Things systems (IIoT). ) and smart parking, self-propelled cars and other smart transport modes.
However, domestic consumers will not be left behind. Robots shaped like humans will form the next level of virtual assistants and may replace future smart speakers.
Although it is difficult to predict how long it will take until online robots equipped with smart device skills will appear, there are available alternatives available. This robotic car kit is compatible with Arduino boards and can run on WiFi as well as Bluetooth.
Internet-enabled robots represent the next development of IoT technology and will become very popular in the near future. Therefore, the Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT) is becoming an important subject in the development of IoT.
In addition, with this new term, it is worth noting that many familiar concepts are gradually forming a relationship with IoT. For example, there are Internet of Battlefield Things and even Internet of Prisons. Obviously, this shows that IoT will be the trend in the coming years and affect everything in life.
