Les Cèdres was built in 1830. In 1904, King Leopold II of Belgium bought and expanded the gardens surrounding the house.
The door of the villa opened a long, winding road, flanked by palm trees and cedar. The statue of the war goddess Athena in bronze is covered with a marble patterned coat placed right at the main entrance.
Once owned by one of the richest kings in European history, the interior is extremely magnificent, large living room, French antique chandeliers, huge wooden and marble fireplaces. Heather, 19th-century style portrait from floor to ceiling with elaborate carved frames.
In addition, the villa also has a wooden floor library with 3,000 books about plants and nature. Including an extremely rare botanical book from the year 1640 and costing up to several hundred thousand Euro.
15 years after Leopold's death, the Marnier-Lapostolle family (famous for its Grand Marnier wine) bought Villa Les Cèdres. In 80 years of ownership, this family has grown many exotic plants to use as raw materials for alcohol production.
Currently, Davide Campari-Milano SpA is a company specializing in the wines of Campari and the Italian Grand Marnier owning Villa Les Cèdres.
It is the combination of history, elegance and prime location along the coast of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat that makes the villa the most expensive house in history.
