Beware of fake VPN apps that spread data.
According to Google, attackers use two main methods to distribute malware:
- SEO poisoning: Manipulating search results on engines like Google Search, causing websites containing malicious code to appear high, tricking users into downloading.
- Phishing: Sending fake emails containing malicious links, causing users to download malware when clicked.
Playfulghost is a dangerous backdoor malware that allows attackers to remotely take control of a device and perform a variety of malicious activities such as keylogging, screenshot taking, audio recording, data theft, and file manipulation.
Google advises users to be cautious when downloading VPN apps, even from seemingly trustworthy sources like the App Store or the provider's official website. Users should double-check the information and only download from trusted sources.
If the device shows signs of abnormality, users should check for applications of unknown origin, use malware scanning software and restart the device to remove the threat.
