Sony returns to the vinyl market with two brand-new Bluetooth turntables.

Sony has officially returned to the vinyl record market after a long absence, introducing two new Bluetooth-enabled vinyl players: the PS-LX3BT and PS-LX5BT. This marks Sony's first new turntable release since 2019, aiming to bring the traditional analog experience closer to modern users through the integration of wireless audio technology.

 

Notably, this comeback comes as Sony is considering a potential joint venture with TCL, aiming to separate its home audio and TV divisions into a new legal entity. This could mean the PS-LX3BT and PS-LX5BT will be the last turntables developed by Sony under its current business structure. Nevertheless, the company's continued investment in physical audio equipment shows that vinyl still holds a significant place in Sony's product strategy.

 

The biggest common feature of both models is their wireless connectivity. Both the PS-LX3BT and PS-LX5BT support Bluetooth, including aptX, aptX Adaptive, and Hi-Res Wireless Audio standards. This allows users to directly connect the player to Bluetooth headphones, wireless speakers, or a soundbar without the need for a bulky amplifier, while still ensuring detailed sound quality.

Sony also aims to be user-friendly for vinyl beginners by equipping the turntable with a fully automatic playback mode activated with just one button. Users simply press 'Start', and the turntable will automatically perform all operations, from placing the stylus on the record to returning the tonearm to its original position when the track ends. This is a major plus for those unfamiliar with manual operation on a turntable.

Both models feature a built-in phono equalizer, allowing for flexible switching between phono and line outputs. This enables the player to connect to modern active speakers or older amplifiers and receivers that lack a dedicated phono input.

 

Additionally, Sony has equipped both models with a USB port, allowing users to digitize their vinyl record collection into music files. The player supports three gain levels (low, medium, and high), making it easy to fine-tune the signal level before starting the recording process.

The PS-LX3BT is designed for beginners or those who want a simple, compact system. This model uses a moving magnet cartridge with a 3.5-gram actuation force, comes with pre-installed audio cables and an integrated phono equalizer, allowing users to listen to music right out of the box without needing to purchase additional accessories.

Meanwhile, the PS-LX5BT is aimed at more serious vinyl enthusiasts, with several worthwhile upgrades. This model uses a high-precision moving magnet cartridge with a stylus weight of only 2 grams, promising a more detailed sound and a wider soundstage.

 

The PS-LX5BT also features a robust unibody design, an aluminum tonearm, a lightweight aluminum platter, and rubber mats, which help reduce vibrations and maintain sound purity. Sony also uses higher-quality electronic components to minimize interference and distortion.

With wired connectivity, the PS-LX5BT is equipped with gold-plated audio ports and a detachable RCA cable, allowing users to easily replace it with a higher-quality cable or choose a length that suits their audio system.

According to the announcement, the PS-LX3BT is now available for pre-order at a suggested price of $400 and is expected to be available in February. Meanwhile, the PS-LX5BT will be available for pre-order in the spring at $500 and is expected to be officially released in April. Both products will be distributed through Sony's website, Best Buy, and Amazon.
