Should I update to iOS 15?
What are your needs? Are you willing to live with problems and errors? How stable is the latest beta? What new features will you get?.
In this article TipsMake.com will help you decide whether to update to iOS 15 or not.
Reasons why you should update to iOS 15 right away
Obviously the biggest reason driving you to iOS 15 is the new, exciting features. iOS 15 is not an update to overhaul the interface, but it comes with a lot of attractive features.
New features of iOS 15 include a new Focus mode, Safari with a new interface, the ability to scan and translate Live Text documents, the ability to share content to watch together when calling FaceTime .
You can explore all of the new iOS 15 features here.
The next reason is that on iOS 15 many components of Siri and Safari are moved to work offline. This will help your device last longer after each battery charge.
Furthermore, iOS 15 comes with a host of privacy improvements. If you are an iCloud subscriber, you will automatically be upgraded to iCloud+ with benefits such as Private Relay anti-tracking redirects, hiding emails.
Finally, in recent betas iOS 15 works quite stable. This partly ensures that the official iOS version will be less prone to errors.
Reasons why you should not rush to update iOS 15
While it would be nice to get a bunch of new features for free, you can wait a few weeks or even months before updating to iOS 15.
The first reason is that iOS 15 has not yet rolled out all the new features. In the first official version released on September 20, there are still some delayed features. Between now and the end of the year, to get all of these new features you might have to update iOS 15 four or five times. Or you can wait and update only once.
The second reason is that many of the new features of iOS 15 do not support older iPhones. Here are the updated/not-updated features details for each iPhone model:
- iPhone 12, iPhone 13 models will receive all the new features of iOS 15
- iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, SE (2nd generation) models will get all new iOS 15 features (except 5G-related features)
- iPhone 8, 8 Plus, X: You won't get features like FaceTime Spatial Audio and Portrait, Live Text, iPhone home and car unlocking, Siri offline support and handling, QuickTake video zoom.
- iPhone 7, 7 Plus, iPod touch (7th generation): You won't get features like FaceTime Spatial Audio and Portrait, Live Text, Siri offline support and handling, detailed maps, home unlock, and more. car with iPhone, Walking Steadiness, zoom in QuickTake video.
- iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, SE (1st generation): You won't get features like FaceTime Spatial Audio and Portrait, Live Text, Siri offline support and processing, detailed maps, home and car unlock with iPhone, Walking Steadiness, zoom in QuickTake video and Spatial Audio.
The third reason is potential iOS problems. Despite improving the testing process, iOS 15 cannot completely eliminate problems. Most likely, the iOS 15.0.1 (or iOS 15.1) fix update will be released a few weeks after iOS 15 was officially released.
Finally, worry about applications. New iOS often crashes applications because developers have not yet optimized for the new operating system. A new version of iOS is useless if it breaks the apps you use or need to use every day.
TipsMake.com's advice: New iPhones should be updated immediately, old iPhones should wait
TipsMake.com thinks that based on the new features you get, it's worth updating to iOS 15 if you're using an iPhone XS or later. The final beta before the official release of iOS 15 was mostly bug-free and users didn't experience any serious problems. Even if there were, those problems would not be too significant compared to what you will get.
If you're using an iPhone 8/iPhone X or earlier, you should consider waiting until iOS 15.1 or 15.2 comes out before updating. You don't get some features anyway and some are delayed so it's best to wait until more stable versions are released.
And if you are passionate about testing new things, keep updating, don't be shy. Maybe you are like me when you have installed iOS 15 beta since July.
If your iPhone is more than 4 years old, it is best to wait until November before updating to iOS 15.
