It turned out that the octopus gave up its ability to evolve to become smarter
Among the countless creatures living in the vast ocean, octopus is a species that makes scientists surprised with new discoveries about them.
Recently, scientists have discovered an extremely special ability of octopus and some other squid species. They are able to regulate RNAs themselves in place of gene changes in DNA. That is, instead of relying on slow evolution like other animals, octopuses can quickly change at the cellular level to suit their surroundings. Many people liken this ability to aliens like aliens.
Joshua Rosenthal from the Massachusetts Institute of Marine Biology (MBL) and Eli Eisenberg, Noa Liscovitch-Braue from Tel Aviv University (Israel) conducted the study and found that of the three molluscs species, including two octopuses and one squid species, the ability to regulate RNA at high frequencies.
In soft mollusks in general and octopus in particular, they do not need to evolve but can adapt quickly. That's because of the ability to constantly change RNA. Meanwhile, humans and fruit flies adapt through evolution by changing DNA, only 1% of RNA is replaced.
Octopus has the ability to change RNA continuously.
According to Rosenthal, octopus has chosen to ignore the possibility of evolution (mutation) in the natural selection process to capture a flexible set of RNAs. This proves that octopus and some mollusks have been present on Earth for a long time, much longer than we thought.
According to Wired, it's possible that the ability to regulate RNA has helped the octopus have a clever brain while their lifespan is only a few years. They can disguise as masters, solve puzzles, open the bottle cap and even know to use weapons.
Some interesting things about octopus may not be known
Octopus is more special than we think. Octopuses are smarter than both dolphins and otters. They own 3 hearts, their blood is blue and an appearance is like alien monsters in science fiction movies.
