Technical configuration - old and confused
In terms of configuration, both ASUS and Acer products use Intel platform. Aspire 5738G has Core 2 Duo processor, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 graphics (512MB), 4GB internal memory and 320 GB hard disk. Meanwhile, the ASUS G51J 3D is much more 'terrorist' with the new Core i7 processor, GeForce GTX 260M graphics (1GB). This shows that G51J's performance is far superior to the Aspire 5738G. However, this is understandable because the actual price of ASUS products is nearly twice as expensive as Acer. Of course, the basic components of a laptop are fully present such as Wifi, Bluetooth, webcam . all present. Both models are pre-installed with 64-bit Windows 7.
3D screen - there was a difference
Both models have a 15.6 'screen (default resolution of 1366x768) with a good viewing angle. However, for Acer, users will have to sit upright when wearing 3D glasses if they want images and effects to be displayed correctly. Meanwhile ASUS doesn't suffer from that. Actual testing shows that users can view from many angles quite comfortably while still enjoying the perfect 3D effects. This is very ideal - especially for gamers who are often used to leaning back unconsciously when avoiding bullets or swords in an action game.
3D glasses - ASUS dominates
The main angle difference is caused by the integrated technology in the glass. The pair of Acer polarized glasses shows a passive effect (Passive). Acer offers 2 pairs of glasses, one pair for those already in glasses (near or remote). Meanwhile, ASUS uses electronic glass to receive signals from an infrared transceiver mounted on a USB port. Besides, the screen of the machine has a frequency of 120 Hz scan - the first time appeared on a laptop. So 3D images when often awake on that detail and sharper than Acer. However, ASUS 'glasses are heavier than Acer's and worn comfortably.
3D multimedia application - not really impressive
Acer 3D screen is provided by TriDef while ASUS chose nVIDIA's solution. This makes a difference not only in the screen and glass but also the 3D content that you can enjoy. Currently, TriDef lists 120 assorted Acer-powered games and offers a Ignition utility that allows to convert regular DVDs into 3D mode. It also allows users to set the depth of the effect.
Meanwhile, nVIDIA with the advantage of graphics hardware has more than 400 games supporting its 3D technology. In fact, playing games on the ASUS G51J in 3D display is better than Acer - especially those with support like Batman: Arkham Asylum.
With the movie, nVIDIA chose a real-time conversion solution and this didn't seem very effective. Whereas with TriDef's application, users can further tweak some of the options of nVIDIA's software, but in general the situation is not much better. The old DVD content hardly improved much while the AVI files downloaded from the Internet are very error-prone.
Operational performance - any of them
Most new titles like Call of Duty or Left 4 Dead run smoothly on the G51J due to the powerful graphics system. However, the performance is slightly lower than the model that does not support 3D. Meanwhile, because the Acer Radeon HD graphics are just universal, the performance is much lower. This is also evident in the test with the 3D Mark 2006 - the score of the ASUS G51J 3D is nearly 6800 while the Acer 5738G is just a little more than 3000. This is easy to understand when the price difference is quite large.
In general, the price of the two products itself shows the difference in class with about 1700 USD for the G51J 3D model while the Acer machine is much cheaper (starting at only 700 USD). However, similar to any other new technology product, users should only buy them when preeminent strengths can be perfectly expressed. Although Acer machines can bring 3D effects into 2D movies quite well, if you look at the angle of use, it is not really perfect and convenient. Meanwhile, the ASUS G51J 3D is more effective when it supports most computer games - one of the key elements of entertainment computers.
