Intel said don't expect a mass 10nm chip before 2019

But Intel has long been developing a 14nm chip.

Intel has clearly scheduled when to use the 10nm process on mass market processors: it is on the holiday season (late) of 2019.

Although the 14nm process is still running well with many versions to improve productivity and reduce power consumption, Intel still faces difficulties in developing 10nm process efficiency.Initially mass production was expected in 2015. In April, Intel said it would have to wait until 2019.

This latest announcement is also the most specific statement, saying that PC with 10nm processor will be released during the holidays, not long after that Xeon processor for servers.

Intel currently has a 10nm processor on the market: it's a low-end i3 chip. This processor is only manufactured in limited quantities and especially for i3 chips without GPU integration. That means Intel must ignore the GPU to be able to make the chip. The processor named i3-8121U is currently running on Lenovo machines.

In the last months of this year, Intel will release other processors, codenamed Whiskey Lake and Amber Lake, and also run the 14nm process.

Delaying the 10m chip showed that Intel's other rivals, for years still chasing the chip maker, were close to catching up.AMD's first generation Ryzen chip is built on GlobalFoundries' 14nm process, 2nd generation Ryzen uses a 12nm process despite keeping the physical size of its 14nm predecessor.AMD intends to sell 7nm process chips next year.

The difference between companies' processes is easily comparable - Intel's 14nm process, for example, has a higher density than GlobalFoundries. But non-Intel chips will soon overtake Intel in terms of transistor density, as chip makers such as GLobalFoundries and TSMC are constantly improving while Intel is gradually losing its power.
