Minecraft Crafting Guide: Essential Recipes for Beginners

Crafting turns collected blocks and materials into tools, storage, lighting, building parts, and equipment. Your inventory contains a 2×2 grid for simple recipes; a crafting table provides the 3×3 grid needed for most useful items.

The exact buttons differ between Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, but the recipe book in the inventory or crafting interface is the safest current reference. Select a known recipe to see its ingredients and place them automatically when the materials are available.

Start with planks and a crafting table

Collect a log from a tree.
Place the log in the 2×2 inventory crafting grid to make four matching planks.
Fill all four slots with planks to make one crafting table.
Place the table in the world and interact with it to open the 3×3 grid.

Most wooden recipes accept any plank type, although the finished item's appearance usually follows the wood used. Bamboo and certain special wood sets can produce related variants such as rafts.

Essential early-game recipes

Craft your first tools

Most basic tools use two sticks as the handle and wood, stone, iron, gold, or diamond as the working material. A netherite tool is made by upgrading diamond equipment rather than placing netherite directly in a basic tool recipe.

Storage and utility recipes

Ladder

Arrange seven sticks in an H shape to make three ladders. Place ladders on suitable vertical surfaces to climb safely.

Signs

Place six matching planks across the top two rows and one stick in the bottom-center slot to make three signs. Signs store text and can also stop flowing water or lava in some builds, though behavior may vary by edition and update.

Doors

Fill two adjacent columns with six matching planks to make three wooden doors. Use six iron ingots in the same pattern for iron doors. Wooden doors can be opened by interaction or redstone; iron doors require a redstone signal.

Painting

Surround one wool block with eight sticks to make a painting. Its displayed art and size depend on the available wall space when placed.

Building recipes

Slabs

Place three matching blocks in a horizontal row to make six slabs. Slabs use half a block of vertical space and are useful for floors, roofs, paths, and spawn-resistant surfaces.

Fences and gates

For a wooden fence, place two sticks in the middle column and four matching planks beside them to make three fence pieces. A fence gate reverses that pattern: two planks in the middle and four sticks on the sides.

Fences connect to neighboring fences, gates, and many solid blocks. Most land mobs cannot jump over a standard fence, but this is not complete protection against spiders, flying mobs, projectiles, or an open gate.

Travel on water

In Java Edition, arrange five matching planks in a U shape to make a boat. Bamboo produces a raft with the same function but a different appearance. Bedrock recipes and outputs can be selected through the recipe book, which avoids confusion when an edition changes a shaped recipe.

Use the recipe book instead of memorizing everything

Minecraft contains far more recipes than a practical beginner list can cover. Mojang's official crafting guide explains how to search the recipe book and identify missing ingredients. If a recipe does not appear, collect its key material, check that experimental features are not changing the world, and verify that you are reading instructions for the correct edition and version.
