Analyze and outline the shape of pigtails
At first glance, the shape of the braided hairstyle is simple, but a closer look will be a bit more complicated.
To make it easier, you can visualize the braids that look like "bricks" stacked like the illustration above.
Draw braids of anime, manga straight form
Step 1: Sketch the basic shape of straight braids
To draw straight braids, just hanging down naturally, draw a vertical line in the middle of the braid, then draw 2 more straight lines next to show the basic shape of the braid. You can also draw the shape of the tail for the braids.
Step 2: Draw the lines inside the braid
From the sketch above, draw two more straight lines inside the drawn outer line and close to the middle line. You can delete the center line after drawing.
Step 3: Draw more strokes to complete the structure of the braid
In this step, you draw more short, diagonal lines downwards. These lines, in turn, originate from the two outermost lines going to the two inner lines.
Note that if starting from the first line, the destination will be on the third line, that is, it intertwines. See the illustration below.
This will help you create a basic shape for your braids.
Step 4: Draw basic straight braids
From the strokes already built in the previous step, you then add curves to each part.
Step 5: Delete the original baseline
Step 6: Complete drawing straight braids
To complete the picture, you can draw more small curling details in the braids to look natural.
Draw anime braids, manga, curvy, wavy
Step 1: Sketch the basic shape of the curled braid
To draw natural curls, anime or manga style, you first need to draw in advance the curve you want the braids to curve into. Around this curve, draw two baselines that represent the outer shape of the braid. Just like the previous hairstyle, you can draw the shape of the tail for the braids.
Step 2: Draw the lines inside the braid
From the sketch above, draw two more curves inside the second drawn line and close to the middle curved line. You can delete this center line after drawing.
Step 3: Draw more strokes to complete the structure of the braid
In this step, draw more short, diagonal curves downwards. These roads, in turn, originate from the two outermost roads leading to the two inner roads.
Note that if coming from the first line, the destination will be on the third line, that is, it is intertwined, similar to the way of drawing straight braids.
This will help you create a basic shape for your braids.
Step 4: Draw basic curled braids
From the curves drawn in the previous step, you add additional curves for each part to make the braid look softer.
Step 5: Delete the original baseline
Step 6: Complete drawing braids, braided hair in a curved shape
Just like when completing a straight pigtails, you can draw more small details in the bend to look natural.
Looking at the braids is quite simple but actually a bit complicated, depending mainly on the softness of your pen strokes. Hopefully the explanations in this tutorial will help you understand how to draw braids and braided hairstyles.
Pick up the pen and try it out. Good luck!
