Elon Musk said he doesn't care about his degree, but Tesla still requires applicants to get a degree

As it turns out, most of the jobs that Tesla is recruiting still require candidates to reach a certain level of education as well as a degree.

Last month, Tesla's CEO Elon Musk tweeted that he was preparing for a home-based AI race / hackathon with Tesla's AI and self-driving team. When a Twitter user questioned how "education can participate", Elon Musk responded as follows:

It is important that you have a deep understanding of AI as well as the ability to apply artificial neural networks effectively. You don't need a college degree, nor do I care if you haven't graduated from high school, as long as you're capable.

This is also not the first time Elon Musk has made such statements, when many times he asserted that at Tesla, the degree does not matter. In an interview in 2014, Elon Musk said that he appreciates those who show their ability in real conditions, rather than those who have a beautiful high-profile profile.

However, what about reality? When looking through the list of vacancies on Tesla's website, 1141 of the 1715 vacancies in North America require candidates to reach a certain level of education and must have the accompanying qualifications. Among them, 86 jobs had "certificates", 769 had "degrees", 25 had "graduated", 726 mentioned "bachelor's degrees", 606 needed "masters degrees", and 53 needed "doctoral degree" in application requirements.

Of these 1141 jobs, 383 of them can accept candidates with "comparable qualifications", and if minus this number, there are still 758 positions at Tesla that require a degree.

Specifically, jobs requiring qualifications at Tesla belong to the following areas:

And, it turns out, the work area that Elon Musk himself said does not need candidates to have a degree when applying for Engineering and IT, is the area that requires the most qualifications at Tesla.

So, who to believe now: CEO Elon Musk, or recruitment requests from Tesla's human resources department?
