Combat tips in Chivalry 2

The massively multiplayer online game Chivalry 2 delivers a gameplay not often seen in competitive games: hand-to-hand deathmatch style combat in a medieval setting. Chivalry 2's success with the genre led to the development of medieval fighting games like Mordhau and For Honor. However, Chivalry 2 is still the most appreciated and has a loyal player base.

Effective combat in Chivalry 2 basically depends on two things: positioning and timing. While it's hard to be the best player right away, applying the following advanced combat tips will help rookie Chivalry 2 stand out from the crowd.

Play in third person

Chivalry 2 gives players two perspectives when controlling the character: a typical first-person perspective and a third-person perspective with a wider field of view. While first-person perspective can feel more immersive, playing in third-person provides gamers with more information about their surroundings and can aid in melee combat.

Practice crouching to avoid

Crouch-dodging is one of Chivalry 2's advanced tricks that makes the difference between winning and losing when fighting an opponent. When an enemy attacks with a high horizontal attack, instead of wasting time countering or blocking it, the player can simply crouch in place and swing the blade above them. Note that this only works against enemies that have swung particularly high.

Connect with your party when spawning again

One of the things that sets Chivalry 2 apart from many online squad fighting games is that players don't respawn individually. Instead, teams respawn in waves. This helps avoid the 'meat grinder' effect of many team-based deathmatch games, where a losing team continues to be defeated because the whole team cannot work together.

Stab or attack on the head when an ally is nearby

Chivalry 2 players can deal damage to their teammates, so it's a no-brainer to swing around in a scuffle with allies at close range. Instead, choose a swing or overhead collision.

This is especially relevant for classes with ranged weapons. A Halberd swing can easily take down a suspicious ally Archer just a few feet away, so be careful when using ranged weapons especially on weak allies.

Time to block the attack

Blocking attacks in Chivalry 2 takes a small amount of stamina during execution. If the player is facing multiple enemies at the same time then there is no other option but to block. But against a single opponent it's best to save as much stamina as possible.

While the player still takes some damage from interception in most situations, it is better to play defensively in the face of an overwhelming force. It can be quite difficult at first, but with enough practice, any player can perfectly block attacks and easily continue to counter enemy counterattacks.
