The simplest way to watch the Marvel Cinematic Universe is in release order. That is the best choice for a first viewing because character introductions, post-credit scenes and surprises arrive in the order Marvel intended. Chronological order is better for a rewatch, but time travel, the multiverse and stories set in other universes make it less exact.

This guide separates the core Marvel Studios path from optional legacy television. It covers released titles through August 2026; announced but unreleased projects are intentionally excluded. For the current studio catalog, check Marvel's official movies page.
Best order for first-time viewers: release order
Start with the films in Phases One through Three. After Avengers: Endgame, add the Disney+ series and Special Presentations in release order. You do not need the older ABC, Netflix, Hulu or Freeform shows to understand the main Infinity Saga.

Later released titles through August 2026
| Order | Title | Type |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Fantastic Four: First Steps | Film, separate universe |
| 2 | Eyes of Wakanda | Animated series |
| 3 | Marvel Zombies | Animated series, alternate continuity |
| 4 | Wonder Man | Series |
| 5 | Daredevil: Born Again, Season 2 | Series |
| 6 | The Punisher: One Last Kill | Special Presentation |
| 7 | X-Men '97, Season 2 | Animated, alternate continuity |
| 8 | Spider-Man: Brand New Day | Film |

Some animated titles and The Fantastic Four: First Steps begin outside the main Earth-616 continuity, but they belong here because their release context matters to the Multiverse Saga. Deadpool & Wolverine also draws heavily on films made before the MCU, so familiarity with the Fox X-Men movies improves the experience without being mandatory.
MCU chronological order
The table below is a practical story order, not a claim that every scene occurs in one neat sequence. Marvel occasionally adjusts the official Disney+ timeline, and Loki, What If...? and several multiverse films cannot be pinned to a single calendar position. Marvel maintains a living MCU timeline on Disney+.
| Step | Era | Watch in this order |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1940s | Captain America: The First Avenger |
| 2 | 1990s | Captain Marvel |
| 3 | Early Avengers era | Iron Man ? Iron Man 2 ? The Incredible Hulk ? Thor ? The Avengers |
| 4 | After New York | Iron Man 3 ? Thor: The Dark World ? Captain America: The Winter Soldier |
| 5 | Cosmic introduction | Guardians of the Galaxy ? Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ? I Am Groot |
| 6 | Ultron and the split | Avengers: Age of Ultron ? Ant-Man ? Captain America: Civil War |
| 7 | Civil War aftermath | Black Widow ? Black Panther ? Spider-Man: Homecoming ? Doctor Strange |
| 8 | Road to the Blip | Thor: Ragnarok ? Ant-Man and the Wasp ? Avengers: Infinity War ? Avengers: Endgame |
| 9 | Multiverse branches | Loki and What If...? sit largely outside normal calendar time; watch them after Endgame |
| 10 | Early post-Endgame | WandaVision ? Shang-Chi ? The Falcon and the Winter Soldier ? Spider-Man: Far From Home |
| 11 | Expanding world | Eternals ? Spider-Man: No Way Home ? Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ? Hawkeye ? Moon Knight |
| 12 | Later post-Endgame | Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ? Echo ? She-Hulk ? Ms. Marvel ? Thor: Love and Thunder |
| 13 | Recent stories | Ironheart ? Werewolf by Night ? The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special ? Quantumania ? Guardians Vol. 3 |
| 14 | Current era | Secret Invasion ? The Marvels ? Agatha All Along ? Daredevil: Born Again ? Brave New World ? Thunderbolts* |
| 15 | Newest additions | Wonder Man ? Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 ? The Punisher: One Last Kill ? Spider-Man: Brand New Day |

Where the Marvel One-Shots fit
- The Consultant: after The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man 2.
- A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer: after Iron Man 2, before Thor.
- Item 47: after The Avengers.
- Agent Carter: after Captain America: The First Avenger.
- All Hail the King: after Iron Man 3.
The Team Thor shorts are comedy extras rather than required continuity.
How to watch the older Marvel Television series
Older shows are optional. Their relationship to the films varies, and trying to interleave every episode with every movie makes a first watch unnecessarily complicated.
Defenders Saga
For the street-level story that leads most naturally toward Echo and Daredevil: Born Again, use this order:
- Daredevil Season 1
- Jessica Jones Season 1
- Daredevil Season 2
- Luke Cage Season 1
- Iron Fist Season 1
- The Defenders
- The Punisher Season 1
- Jessica Jones Season 2
- Luke Cage Season 2
- Iron Fist Season 2
- Daredevil Season 3
- The Punisher Season 2
- Jessica Jones Season 3
- Echo
- Daredevil: Born Again
Agent Carter and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Watch Agent Carter after The First Avenger. For Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., release order is safer than a rigid chronology because early seasons react to events in The Winter Soldier, Age of Ultron and Civil War, while later seasons move into time travel and increasingly independent continuity.
Runaways, Cloak & Dagger, Inhumans and Helstrom can be watched as optional side stories. They are not prerequisites for the main MCU movies or current Disney+ series.
Two useful trailer checkpoints
The first trailer introduces the Guardians' Holiday Special; the second previews Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Watch them here before continuing the relevant part of the marathon.
Which order should you choose?
- First MCU watch: release order.
- Rewatch focused on story chronology: use the chronological table, accepting that multiverse titles are branches.
- Short marathon: watch the Phase One-to-Three films first, then select post-Endgame series tied to the characters you follow.
- Daredevil-focused watch: use the Defenders Saga order before Echo and Born Again.
