With an apparent brightness of -10, Mayak is brighter than any other star in the sky, it is only slightly behind the Moon. Researchers can use the brightness of Mayak to study how best to calculate the apparent brightness of small satellites.

Mayak, which is very small in size, only 340.5x100x100 mm, weighs about 3.6 kg, contains power, control systems and most importantly, sunlight reflectors. When entering the orbit 600km from the Earth, these panels can be released in orbit to create a triangular sail with an area of ​​16m2 and reflect light.
