Strange unsolved mysteries in 2025
2025 is likely to be one of the most tumultuous years for many people and the world. As 2025 comes to an end, let's take a look at some of the strangest mysteries that have yet to be solved.
Missing plane
On August 2, 2025, Gregory Vaughan, 72, Kim Worner, 66, and their dog Molly boarded a small green plane at George Town Airport on Tasmania's north coast. Their destination was central New South Wales, and their flight path would take them over the notorious Bass Strait. They planned to stop for fuel in regional Victoria before continuing on to Hillston.
Shortly after 5 p.m., a Vaughan family member notified authorities that the couple had not arrived at Hillston Airport as scheduled. A full search was launched shortly thereafter. Vaughan, the pilot, did not contact authorities at any time during the flight, and no distress calls were received. By August 5, neither the couple, their dog, nor the plane had been found. Severe weather conditions slowed the aerial search, but even after it resumed, police were still unable to determine what had happened. All searches were officially called off in late September.
UFO sightings spike in Ireland
Ireland has experienced a wave of UFO sightings throughout 2025, many of which have been reported by locals in various counties. In early January, people reported seeing bright lights hovering in the sky over Newry, Dublin and Youghal before disappearing.
In April, a witness in Portobello saw a triangle with three lights and a faint beam below it. That same day, another person in County Meath reported two glowing orbs that changed color before disappearing—neither of which matched any aircraft activity at the time. Reports continued through mid- and late 2025 of orbs, dim lights, and floating objects that dropped from view. These incidents occurred in both urban and rural areas, on both clear and overcast nights. To date, there has been no scientific or official explanation.
Faceless Intruder
One of the most terrifying paranormal reports of 2025 comes from Chester Castle, a medieval fortress with 900 years of history. In October, a motion-detection camera captured a pale, hooded, faceless figure standing at the main gate—the exact spot where the medieval gate used to be.
The control room immediately contacted the guard on duty. When he arrived, he felt as if something was following him. His dog refused to leave the car. Despite his fear, he searched the grounds but found no intruder and no sign of a break-in. English Heritage then received a series of unusual reports from multiple locations: an unidentified hand at Belsay Hall, soldiers disappearing into the woods of Wrest Park, and the sound of bouncing balls echoing through Wrest Park after closing time.
There is no explanation for these strange events.
Spy balloons
Public concern about unexplained high-flying objects has increased since the Chinese spy balloon incident in 2023. Sporadic sightings continue in 2024, but increase again in 2025.
A Stratollite balloon was spotted in the skies over Colorado in October, following appearances over Wisconsin in June and Alaska in August. News outlets have reported that the objects are research balloons, but locals remain skeptical. The biggest concern is privacy—no one knows what data is being collected or who ultimately benefits from it.
Drones
If not balloons, then drones . In early November, unidentified drones appeared near a Belgian military base known to house US nuclear weapons. The Belgian defense minister expressed deep concern.
The drones arrived in two waves – the first on Saturday and the second on Sunday evening. The first phase involved checking local security radio frequencies. This was followed by larger drones, which officials said were intended to ' destabilize the region and its population .' The minister described the operation as espionage and said he had an idea of the origin of the drones, but declined to speculate publicly. This comes after drones were spotted above another Belgian base near the German border. The identity of the operator is still unknown.
