Steve Jobs and Bill Gates' 18-year-old resumes are back in the news
Photos of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates' 18-year-old resumes shared by American reporter Jon Erlichman are causing a stir on social media.
Specifically, it is the job application of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in 1973 and Microsoft boss Bill Gates in 1974, when both were 18 years old.
In his handwritten letter, in the skills section, Jobs said he was knowledgeable about technology and design, with a special ability in electronics and technology. His interests were listed as "design engineering, digital".
However, the Apple founder misspelled his own name, not capitalizing "Jobs" and the first name "Steven". In his home address, Steve Jobs used the name "Reed College", where he briefly attended before dropping out, and majored in "English literature".
In 2021, this job application was successfully auctioned for $222,400.
Bill Gates' resume was completed when he was a freshman at Harvard. In the resume, he wanted to apply for the position of "systems analyst" or "systems programmer".
The Microsoft co-founder revealed many personal information such as height of nearly 178 cm and weight of 59 kg, unmarried, and being a US citizen. He also listed a series of experiences showing that he can work with many different server systems and programming languages.
This job application from Gates is now on display at the Living Computer Museum in Seattle.
Many social media users said that the 18-year-old profiles of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates were "a part of history" and described them as "amazing" documents.
Bill Gates' CV at age 19 reveals little-known information
Bill Gates reposted his 19-year-old resume on his personal LinkedIn page. This resume revealed many little-known information about him, surprising many people about the achievements of the Microsoft founder.
"Whether you're a recent college graduate or a college dropout, I'm sure your resume is a lot better than mine was 48 years ago," Gates writes.
This resume was written by Gates when he intended to apply for a job as a programmer or systems analyst in June 1974. At that time, Bill Gates was still using the name William H. Gates and was a freshman at Harvard University.
In this CV, Bill Gate listed some personal information such as address, height and weight. In 1974, Bill Gate's salary was $12,000, equivalent to $71,000 in 2022, a "huge" salary for a freshman.
Bill Gate also listed some of the jobs and projects he participated in in this CV including:
- Developed many programs on Intel MCS 8008 computers Paul Allen - who later became the co-founder of Microsoft.
- Worked as a programmer for about 9 months at TRW Systems Group in Vancouver - a developer of military and civil space systems.
After entering university, Bill Gate got A's in many specialized subjects such as System Structure, Data Management, Translation Program, Computer Graphics and got A's in all.
However, according to Fortune, Gates' CV is considered inappropriate for today's era because it goes too deep into irrelevant issues, such as height, weight, and uses some words that do not demonstrate his specific role.
Previously, another resume of Bill Gates was also made public in 2017. In that version, Gates also listed similar information but the American billionaire's salary at that time was 15,000 USD.
